It's true. according to statistics, all those high schoolers who join right into the military will learn the hard truth that they get paid diddle..even worse, they get paid LESS than what grocery clerks make a year!!!

the only benefit they see is that they are "taken care of" and get "free college"..but you're also risking your life at the same time!!

did you know this?

Military wages depend on your rank and, while they might not be especially high, there are also other factors to consider.

An E-1, the lowest Navy recruit, could expect to earn a yearly wage of just over $19,000. Ignoring the fact that they automatically promote to E-2 after their first 9 months, then to E-3 after another 9 months. Each promotion coming with a pay raise.

You can also expect to get thousands of dollars a year for food, etc. And, if you qualify, BAH to pay for off-base housing. The military also pays for your and your dependents' medical care on base and provides insurance for care off base. Life insurance too.

There is the whole paying for college thing, but more than that the military is paying to train recruits in marketable skills and certifications that can be applied to civilian life. So, you could consider it a sort of investment for your civilian career, especially if you're in a more technical field.

There's also something like 30 days of vacation time per year and perks like tax-free shopping options and discounts. Also retirement savings options and pension.

You're probably not going to strike it rich in the military, but there are benefits to joining. If you're worried about being shot at, you could join the Navy or the Airforce. Not as likely to get shot as the Army or Marines.

Free college, Healthcare, dental, housing, food and discounts all says they get it pretty good. Sure they deploy, but it's not bad at all unless we're at war and even then the pay goes up.

They have great retirement benefits and yeah they get paid pretty good for straight out of high school when you factor in the benefits. Long term the pay goes up too along with the option to use your job experience in the real world if you ever get out.

What an unintelligent article.

Yeah, I served. I factored in my pay as a private compared to the hours of work I put in and I made like $3.10 an hour essentially. Granted, it was free housing and I got 3 meals a day on post, if I could stomach 3 meals a day.

Yeah this also. The GI bill paid for about all of my college, and I could see an on-post doctor or dentist, it didn't matter where, for free.

Yeah, your paycheck may not be that great, but the benefits can't be beat. Housing, food, and medical all paid for. It's as close to socialism as you can get in the US.
