You have to be a REALLY good worker AND have a fair boss to get big upgrades in pay while staying at one company throughout. Most people do it by playing the interview circuit. Its another layer of the game. It does work but you have to be willing to move around.

Most people are really good at this. Some even stayed for only 6 months before moving up the ladder at another company. To be fair, you don't know the circumstances. It probably isn't luck at all. Maybe she negotiated for the salary. Maybe she has more relevant experience than you. People tend to think that money just comes down to who started first, but relevant experience and negotiation go a helluva long way.
