What stings worse is she has only been here for 2 years. That and the fact that she just left, for another Department with a bigger salary/position level.

Some people have all the luck. I had to suffer like 5 years just to get a stable position.

Two years is considered relatively new to our company.

I found out because I was just given access to the Payroll system, to help out.

Lesson to anyone: Apply and interview if you want to find better pay. Don't settle. The girl in my topic waited only like 4 months. after getting a 'fixed' post

that's a bullshit policy to discourage pay raise requests. if your employer tries to fire you for asking your co-workers how much they make you cant take them to court.

At will states can fire you for whatever, but it's highly illegal in America for a company to institute such policy.

You have to be a REALLY good worker AND have a fair boss to get big upgrades in pay while staying at one company throughout. Most people do it by playing the interview circuit. Its another layer of the game. It does work but you have to be willing to move around.

This is true, unless you get promotions. But depending on what level you start at or what type of position you're in, there's sometimes not much room for advancement.

Yeah. It took me until age 30 to figure this out. Most people are really good at this. Some even stayed for only 6 months before moving up the ladder at another company. Spend time doing stuff 6 months and out the door on the 7th for a bigger position/pay.

It's actually illegal to have a policy like that if the business deals in government contract work. It's also illegal to require pay disclosure.

depends who you're talking to. if it's someone from a competing business you can't talk about anything unless you're interviewing for a job

To be fair, you don't know the circumstances. It probably isn't luck at all. Maybe she negotiated for the salary. Maybe she has more relevant experience than you. People tend to think that money just comes down to who started first, but relevant experience and negotiation go a helluva long way.

True. Those two are pretty relevant in setting the ball in your favor. Doesn't make it sting any less though. Especially, when I know I do a better job than her.

I don't hate the player. I just hate the game. It seems I have to be willing to play the game of musical chair(jumping from posts) to get anywhere in life.

I don't know how people do it either. How do you take like only 3 or 6 months on the job and leave for the next best thing? Doesn't it irk the old employer or even the new one?

Definitely, I feel you. I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to say you were wrong or deserved it, just pointing out that we've probably all been on the other side of the equation, and it's always good to consider others circumstances. But I came off provocative, I apologize.

how are you doing now, if I may ask? did it piss you off when you found out?

For me, it's not just the grade level. It's the steps. Basically, we gain 1 step per year of work. I am seeing people with 2 years less than me having like 2 more steps than me. I think I am going to ask people how things work about the steps. I suspect the organization just cough up the first offer with the lowest steps and expect you to decline until something relevant to your previous experience.

smh.

No it isn't...

It's a violation of the National Labor Relations Act to prevent workers from discussing labor conditions, which is understood to include wages. It's explicitly prohibited for a federal contractor, with the potential for the company to lose their contract if they are in violation.

problem is that outside federal jobs its not clear cut whether that law is enforceable. there's also the fact that under the current administration there'd be no enforcement...
