As for whose perspective gets to be the one that shapes everyone else's life, the exact same as before. Subject experts. Teachers have the discretion to put books on the curriculum, and they usually pick their books from a literary canon. That canon is formed the exact same way as before. Outraged parents have as much influence as they always have, regardless of which method you use for literary analysis.

"Modern" art is a fucking joke when there's painters that can paint amazing realistic portraits and they get trashed on by people who paint random colors on a paper and call it "art".

Art is subjective to the one experiencing it.

Back to the dick tree example, of a person perceiving the dick tree claims with complete certainty that the picture is a dick and the artist says no, it is a tree, I would be more inclined to side with the artist in knowing that the picture is a tree, but that doesn't change the fact that the tree looks like a dick. Saying something looks like something else is different than claiming something is something else than intended.

Everything comes down to people not wanting to be wrong and will double down even when official sources say otherwise. It also doesn't help that they will have like minded people backing/ joining with them instead of just admitting they were mistaken. But just because an official source says one thing doesn't stop anyone from interpreting it in any way and there's nothing wrong with that. Claiming something is another thing with absolute certainty when the creator says it is another thing is just shitting all over the creator's work.

I understand that an individual's perspective is essentially their reality and no one ever wants to be wrong, everyone is the hero in their story etc. But when there's someone that creates a story, it's like they are shaping their own reality, we are free to interpret it all we want but in the end claiming it as something it is not is disrespectful to the creator. When perspectives are proven wrong, it is not healthy for a society to promote being openly in denial with clear evidence saying otherwise just because they can't stand the result. There's no progression just decline in mental/ emotional growth.

We would need to shape a society that was okay with being wrong, correcting their view, and moving on until the point in question was proven wrong again where the cycle just starts over

Of course they aren't. This was just an isolated case of a writer projecting himself and his own experiences onto the characters; in his eyes, they're gay. But, that isn't his call to make. If the producers say that they are not gay, then they are not gay.
