Jessica has four kids. Every week is a birthday party or family reunion or swimming pool social, another opportunity to stand around platters of spare ribs and dinner rolls with her fellow moms.

Your conscious mind is busy the whole day with how many calories is in everything, what you can eat and whos watching, she says. After a few intrusive comments over the yearsshould you be eating that?she has learned to be careful, to perform the role of the impeccable fat person. She nibbles on cherry tomatoes, drinks tap water, stays on her feet, ignores the dessert end of the buffet.

Then, as the gathering winds down, Jessica and the other parents divvy up the leftovers. She wraps up burgers or pasta salad or birthday cake, drives her children home and waits for the moment when they are finally in bed. Then, when shes alone, she eats all the leftovers by herself, in the dark.

Its always hidden, she says. I buy a package of ice cream, then eat it all. Then I have to go to the store to buy it again. For a week my family thinks theres a thing of ice cream in the fridgebut its actually five different ones.

Jesus, woman, it's no wonder you're a fatass if you're eating five, I assume, half-gallons of ice cream in a week. Or a bunch of burgers, pasta, and cake.

That is the basic gist of the article. Fat, mostly, women who can't get their weight under control through a permanent change to their eating habits and are whining about the doctors who are telling them to lose some weight for their health.

They point out that it was only decades ago that Americans started getting fatter, but also tried to say the reasons they're fat are totally biological and irreversible. That doesn't really jive.

It's a lifestyle issue

That should be resolved by people feeling so much shame from being fat that they prevent their offspring from being fat too except oh no now they have genetics to blame

I can understand the confusion. When they say that science shows diets rarely work, what they mean is that studies show most people don't manage to complete them (iirc the number cited was absurdly high, 95-98%). And even when people do lose weight, they're more likely to gain it all back. So going on a diet, like Atkins or something, is likely to fail.

This of course is separate from the fact that people eat too many calories. Honestly I thought the piece was quite interesting, especially if you skim the anecdotes. They're just there to make you feel more.

otherwise some people have thyroid issues that make them gain weight easily/mess with their metabolism
