Gangsta rap started out in the late 1980s and continued well into the 1990s with Ice T, NWA, Snoop, Tupac, Biggie, etc. It started to die out in the late 1990s (especially after a lot of its most famous artists had died), but then 50 Cent came into the scene in the early 2000s. If you read some of their bios you see that most of them actually had more middle class backgrounds than you would think.
