You can do it with an MS but nobody looking to fill a researcher spot is going to bother looking at something like your Github to find out if you're a some superstar coder so someone with a doctorate will have a huge advantage. MS and PhD are almost equal at places like Google, Amazon, and Apple since it's all about how well you can code. I also recall Google saying something recently about how they don't care if you even have a degree as long as you're a great programmer so there's that. As far as certifications go, I don't know much about that since I'm not familiar with jobs where it would be relevant other than hearing that it could lead to pay raises for BS and MS holders.
