Nostalgic, but aged poorly: 1-2

I feel the exact opposite of this. They're far from my favorites, but I feel like the early seasons aged the best and will likely always be the most timeless. This is just in their nature, however, as it's before the show went the whole "commentary and lampooning of contemporary issues" route. Sometimes I miss the old style, but I enjoy them both.

I feel the same way about South Park season 2 as I do about The Simpsons season 2, which is that I think they still hold up incredibly well and are well within the series' golden age and I don't really understand why people don't include them in the series' prime

Having very rarely ever watched Survivor, I'm guessing that's a post about Survivor.

This shooting-satire's cutting deep so far.

We'll see how the period-jokes evolve.

two things

1. the new search feature is pretty awesome, I could actually select this topic and go directly to it just by typing south park into the search bar.

2. this episode was bizarre and not really that funny to me?

Was hoping it would continue directly from last season. I didnt really think this episode was funny so hopefully theyre not really serious about canceling the show and making episodes suck on purpose. I was totally expecting the end to say Shelly was shot since she doesnt really exist most of the time anyways >_>

The shooting-stuff was great satire, just not particularly LOL-material. The period/menopause jokes and Black Panther bits were fine, though I didn't get the spy-references or the song Randy sung at the end.

apparently the cartman leather jacket stuff was a reference to jessica jones which... I didn't get at all until it was pointed out to me. shooting stuff felt dumb to me. it was like they were trying to capture the controversy of more classic south park but they failed to actually say anything. then again half of reddit is calling this episode """genius""" so what do I know?

Mackey was the best part of the shooting stuff. Him saying I got this one and then panicking was amusing, but that was about it. Kinda surprised even PC Principal didnt seem to give a shit about the shootings though

really? I think the whole thing they were trying to say is just how bizarre it is that school shootings are basically considered normal now

I wouldn't exactly call that a hot take considering I see that sentiment constantly on places like board 8, reddit, facebook, and basically any social platform. if it took them an entire 20 minute episode to say something that is not controversial at all, which is generally agreed on by pretty much everyone, and are claiming they are actively trying to get the show cancelled I'd say that's pretty disappointing

they also made the gun violence so over the top and unrealistic that it sort of goes against the point you're describing. this feels more like a satire against people who are freaking out over gun violence when it's obviously not as bad in real life as it was depicted here. or, rather, they're failing to commit to one stance over the other and just making vague jokes.

Isnt that the basic formula of the show?

Dead Kids's brilliance was that they took the concept of people not caring about shootings that aren't their home and showed how callous it is by following that thought process into repeated shootings that are their home.
To me, that goes further than message boards going "another shooting but nobody's doing anything again."

And I wondered how far they would go to represent the shootings. I think it being repeatedly shown as normal background noise worked, from the newscaster in the foreground to Butters the Hall Monitor having a gun.

Any bets on South Park character who died in the background this episode?

My guesses: Stan's alive but injured and very casual about it. The Ag teacher died.

Probably nobody significant. I mean Stan was taking the math test with everybody else. If the shooter got into their classroom Kenny probably died in the background again like in the distracted driving episode
