His daddy gave him money and he bought casinos, bled them dry, and then closed up shop.

If I had enough startup money to do that shit, and I was a complete scumbag who only cared about making money, then I would be a billionaire too

He was born rich. It's incredibly hard to be born to someone worth several hundred million dollars and not end up that way yourself. Even if your parents don't give you their wealth (which his did) you still have a lot of advantages over the average citizen. There's nothing impressive about it.

http://fortune.com/2015/08/20/donald-trump-index-funds/

Donald Trumps net worth has grown about 300% to an estimated $4 billion since 1987, according to a report by the Associated Press. But the real estate mogul would have made even more money if he had just invested in index funds. The AP says that, if Trump had invested in an index fund in 1988, his net worth would be as much as $13 billion.

The S&P 500 has grown 1,336% since 1988.

Other billionaires net worths have beaten the stock markets growth in that time. Bill Gates, for example, saw his increase 7,173%, to $80 billion, since 1988. Warren Buffetts wealth grew 2,612% in the same time period, to $67.8 billion.

Err I feel like that just proves my point? If he had just done basic investing then his wealth would have actually grown more than it did with him actively trying to maximize it... He barely beat inflation.

So yea, Trump can be rich, he can be president, and he can also be a fucking idiot.

Or do you ironically think that any idiot in America can become a billionaire?

No, I'm not. Without winning a record-setting lottery, there's no way to earn a billion dollars in your lifetime if you are an idiot.

It's disingenuous to suggest otherwise.

Trump had enough money that it would have naturally grown to multiple billions of dollars if he had done almost nothing with it beyond putting it into an index fund, compared to what he actually did.

Well first off you should have used the word "unironically"

Second off, it is possible. Trump clearly didn't make all of his decisions on his own. Nobody who makes that much money does. You hire people to analyze markets, determine financial risk, and advise what you invest into.

You don't become rich by being smart, you do it by hiring smart people.

Not to mention that he had a BIG leg up compared to many business people since his father supported him financially and provided access to an extensive network of people to contact for decision making.
