A study from the World Health Organization said one in four people worldwide are physically inactive, putting them at greater risk for diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.

The data published Tuesday in the journal Lancet Global Health found 28 percent of adults globally don't exercise, a figure left unchanged from 2001.

"This puts more than 1.4 billion adults at risk of developing or exacerbating diseases linked to inactivity, and needs to be urgently addressed," read an excerpt from the study, which also notes declines in mental health and quality of life for people who don't exercise enough.

Guidelines from the Department of Health and Human Services suggest adults participate in some type of muscle strengthening activity at least twice a week, along with moderate aerobic exercise for 150 minutes per week or 75 minutes per week if vigorously working out.

Multiple studies have shown exercise along with a healthy diet can lower the risk of health problems such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. In April, a study published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation found exercise, a healthy diet and other factors could add more than 10 years to your life.

The WHO study showed women were less physically active than men, with 32 percent of women failing to exercise enough, compared to 23 percent of men.

Countries with higher incomes tended to show higher rates of inactivity. In low-income countries, the percentage of physically inactive people was 16 percent, compared to 26 percent for middle-income nations and 37 percent for high-income countries.

The regions with the highest rates of inactivity include Latin America and the Caribbean (39 percent), high-income Western countries (37 percent) and high-income Asia Pacific countries (36 percent).

To encourage more people to exercise, WHO launched a Let's Be Active campaign with a goal of reducing physical inactivity 10 percent by 2025 and 15 percent by 2030. The study said if current trends continue, the 2025 goal will not be met.

In June, a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found only 23 percent of Americans were getting enough exercise.

Guys actually push themselves though. Women will be rocking the 1-2 pound rehab weights or doing like 20 min of light cardio (treadmill walking) and that's it.

That's been my general experience, although I have seen some women in exceptionally good shape that were absolutely killing it. Putting up some decent weight on their squats, actually doing deadlifts and other compound exercises, etc. I don't see it often, but every time I'm actually really impressed.

I like to think there's a healthy middle ground where you aren't chaining yourself to a treadmill and eating a handful of oats for all three meals and being so lazy that you file for a disability parking pass and use the electric scooters in the grocery store because you're afraid if you move you might lose some of that precious fat that encases your entire body in one enourmous gob.

And it's likely a lot of those women are there to lose weight. "You lose weight in the kitchen. You gain muscle at the gym." More people should accept that. I have a co-worker that will eat several candy bars, sweet rolls, and a bunch of other crap throughout the day but claim it's fine because she's going to the gym after work. You have to jog for like 3 miles to burn off one candy bar... Is it surprising she's VERY overweight?

Haha. Lol.

Shes the type of person who is probably better off not going to the gym. Shell always look like shit but at least she wont be getting much worse.

If I had a dollar for everytime Ive heard someone say they think they can eat like shit because they ran for 10 minutes on a treadmill.... well Id have a lot of money.

Literally undoing any progress and ending up eating more shit in a day than they would have, because they went to the gym.... so they earned it

Yeah, it requires a lot of work and doesn't yield results if you only do so much. I actually did a good job working out when I was in college for a while but it didn't really garner any attention from girls so now I've gotten lazy and work out just enough to stay moderately toned.

I want to do more but just don't have the motivation or feel like spending the time when I don't have any girls to talk to. It gets even harder as you get closer to 30 and most girls around your age are starting to get married and/or have kids.

People also have different levels of energy, and your energy declines as you get older. There are a lot of days where I get home from work and just do not feel like doing shit. It's a catch-22 where exercise helps increase your energy levels, but you don't want to exercise if you don't have energy.
