My dad is very sick and may not live much longer.

Advanced liver cancer
Possible pancreatic cancer
Stage 4 kidney disease
His blood cells aren't retaining water, so the water is filling up cavities in his abdomen
He's barely eating anything, and hasn't eaten a full meal in about a month
His memory is slipping pretty hard at times

Such a rollercoaster of emotions this week has been. I'm starting with one of my cousins and a few family members are also in town to see him.

I finally learned the story of what happened between my mom and dad when I was young and why they divorced. Neither my mom or my dad ever talk about it. My cousin, aunts, and uncles filed me in on a good amount of it.

He's in hospice care now and they're keeping him comfortable...

I've been here since Monday. I drove from Austin, TX to Pensacola, FL. I told my bosses what was going on and they said to just go and don't worry about anything. I'm still getting paid as normal without needing to take vacation. I was planning to drive back today, but my bosses told me to stay and help my family out.

Sucks about your old man. Watching somebody waste away due to illness is not a fate I'd wish upon someone. Part of the reason why I'm glad my mother died my car accident, instead of something like cancer. Fuck cancer in every capacity.

Yeah... If it weren't for the repeated swelling in his stomach he could be at home with home hospice care.

He's likely way too weak to endure chemotherapy/radiation... High risk of bleeding out with surgery...

What happened between your parents?

My dad was promoted to CEO of some construction company and my mom worked at IBM. My dad liked to drink and was driving after having some drinks... He ended up hitting some people crossing the street in his company car. They sued the company for about $2 million and he lost his job.

After that he went on a big downward spiral and started doing drugs. According to my aunts and uncles, it wasn't a pretty sight. My mom tried to stay and help him, but she eventually decided to walk away to protect me, herself, and her career. He likely would have ended up dragging her down with him somehow. IBM transferred her to Austin, TX when I was maybe about 3 or 4.

My grandparents on my dad's side took him in, paid for his rehab, etc. After graduating from rehab, he went back to the same environment and apparently started doing drugs again here and there. There were pretty obvious signs that he was continuing to do some type of drugs as the years went on.

The event that sticks out for me happened a few years ago. He sent me a check for my birthday, but it bounced. He said he sent me a money order to make up for it, but it was actually just an empty envelope. I told him not to send me any more money after that. I wasn't in a place where I needed money from him any way.

According to my cousin who has been caring for my dad for the last month and a half, he has been clean for about 18 months. He probably decided to stop when he noticed his health declining.

My mom is still very close with my dad's side of the family... I've grown up away from them all since I was young, so I hardly know anyone on my dad's side. They all know of me because my dad apparently always brags about me to everyone. Many of them haven't seen me since I was very little.

It has been nice to reconnect with my cousins, aunts, and uncles at least.

Also the OP should read "I'm staying with one of my cousins..."

I'm going to have to head back home tomorrow morning. Probably not going to be able to talk to me) my dad again... I'm glad I came to visit and was able to talk to him, though.

I'm also glad I was able to reconnect with my dad's side of the family.
