2004 had 4 divisions: Hyrule, 20XX, Midgar, and Chaos. Mario was the 2 Seed in Hyrule (Link was obviously the 1.) Keep in mind that 2004 was the contest where the bracket was designed to intentionally force SFF matches early and often. Hyrule Round 2 was literally: Link/Ganondorf, Yoshi/Luigi, Crono/Magus, and Mario/Bowser.

Mario vs Shadow was so close because it become a proxy for Mario vs Sonic, which anyone who was an adult in 2003 will remember as the video game rivalry of the 90's and a lot of people wanted to see that match. Don't think of the match as Mario being bad, it's all Shadow overperforming because he literally channeled Sonic for that one match.

You can argue Mario underperformed in his first two matches a bit but you have to remember that Mario was the massive favourite in that contest so he may have started out with a base of people anti-voting him from the getgo. It's also possible that 2002 Servbot just wasn't that weak, and that both he and Morrigan were benefitting from Marvel vs Capcom 2 being a big thing then. We'll never know.

Mario was not even close to a massive favorite in 2003. Link was the overwhelming bracket favorite.

and my god yeah I remember 2004's bracket and how atrocious it was with SFF matches.

I mean that's the excuse we made for him but Mario World/Sonic 2 was a 70/30 crushing in the Games Contest and nobody thinks Mario/Sonic would be close if it actually happened now (sadly)
