Rand Paul is a disgrace to his father. Even a moderate libertarian or libertarian leaning republican should have opposed Kavanaugh and Sessions, but he endorsed both. I still think he was the best of the republican primary candidates, by default. But yeah, he's a turd.

I would never recommend sleeping with a loaded gun UNDER YOUR PILLOW. That's extremely dangerous, and a good way for you or someone you love to get killed in your sleep. Maybe in your night stand drawer loaded. I don't even keep a round in my shotgun that is near my bed because of the internal hammer being so easy to drop (if it were to get knocked down in the middle of the night and fire, that would be a disaster.)

Your gun does you no good in a case. 10 years ago I used to carry a handgun without a round in the chamber and just a loaded magazine, and a police officer disarmed me (traffic stop, normally they don't disarm me but this time there was like 6 people in the car and they were searching the car), and when he returned the gun to me he said "Don't ever carry a gun without a bullet in the fucking chamber again. Do you think you have time to put on a seat belt on before a car wreck?" That stuck with me and now having worked with self-defense classes and things like that, I'm just going to say.. unless that gun is for target shooting or hunting, it is fucking useless if it is out of reach when you are home. When someone breaks in to your house with a gun and is ready to kill you and your loved ones, do you think you can tell them "Hold on, I have to get my gun out of the closet and unlock it"? I'm afraid of a lot of things but liberals isn't one of them. I'm terrified of this new Supreme Court with the addition of Kavanaugh, I think we'll lose even more of our Constitutional freedoms and rights.

It's not paranoia to prepare for the worst. He's not saying it's even likely to happen in his lifetime, but if it does, he doesn't want it to be at the very end. You're very unlikely to need to defend yourself at all, but it's not unreasonable to have the skills to maintain your life.

No, I keep a bullet in the chamber of a handgun that I carry on person. That is common practice, and 99% of all people with CCW and 100% of all police carry this way. I do not keep a chambered cartridge in the long guns for home protection. I just don't keep them locked up until I leave the house and nobody is going to be home. This is literally self-defense gun 101 that any cop or self-defense or fighting pistol/carbine/rifle/shotgun class will teach you. I have had multiple break ins in vehicles in my neighborhood, one break in to a house (you may be right about them knowing the intruders, I don't actually know), and one person tried to carjack me and my (now late) wife. I didn't have to fire the pistol, but if I did and he didn't back off the second I went for the gun, I wouldn't have had time to unholster, unsafety, AND THEN PULL THE SLIDE BACK AND LET IT GO, and then pull the trigger. You only have time for draw/unsafety (in one simultaneous motion) and squeeze the trigger while aimed at center mass until the threat tops. Or in the case of internal striker "safe action" weapons like a Glock, the safety is a part of the trigger mechanism so it is just "draw->shoot."

He may as well not be armed with that attitude. There's nothing wrong with leaving a bullet in the chamber, it's not going to shoot itself. As long as appropriate precautions are taken, it's really none of your business how he chooses to manage potential threats.

This was ... I want to say two years ago? Some guy was standing in front of my car when my wife, my friend, and myself came out of the store with car parts, and I thought he was just admiring it. He said "Can I talk to you for a second? Without her? No it's cool, with her. But without her?" And my wife immediately knew to get back to the other side of the car away from him. I walked around him while keeping my eyes on him the entire time and got to the driver side of my car and I said "What's up?" thinking maybe he wanted to borrow money or something. He said "No, it's cool man, it's cool. But this is my car." And I was like, "Excuse me?" while watching his hands carefully. He said "You can't just take my car. I'm calling the cops, you're finished. This is my fucking CAR!!!!" and steps towards me, and I stepped back and unbuckled my handgun (a FEG AP~MBP in tiny ass .32ACP at the time, basically a Walther PPK clone) and unsafetied it, and started to draw and right as that happened he stepped back with both hands up (not all the way up, like chest level) and my friend who was putting parts in his truck came over to see what the hell was going on. He looked at me and my friend and then put his cell phone to his ear (no one was on it that I could tell, the phone was off) and started mumbling incoherently in to the phone and wandered off. I fully re-holstered the handgun and told my wife to go inside the store and let them know what happened and not to come back out until the police were here. And yes, I then called the non-emergency police line and waited for an officer. He took the description down, said he was glad we were safe and that I was lucky I was carrying. I don't know if he was about to car jack me, or if he was just so messed up on drugs he thought I actually stole his car, but when you step to me aggressively like that I'm not going to chance you pulling a fucking knife and stabbing me. I have something to live for... or at least I used to... and I'm not going to have that taken from some drugged out punk. I don't know if the guy ever got found or even talked to, they didn't follow up with me, but no one got hurt, good guy or bad guy, so that's the best possible outcome.

Yeah, Ron Paul, while certainly not perfect, was pretty awesome, and had overall noble intentions and consistent policy. Still the only politician that I've ever gone to a speech / rally for.

Rand Paul has been terrible. he may have still been the best choice in the Republican primary of 2016, but that's only because that was a total clown car shit show of horrible choices. Cripes, Trump wasn't even close to the worst option amongst that gang.

People call for civility but if you support legislation that causes actual physical harm to or thr financial ruin of someone that a person cares about, you should expect a little hostility.

You shouldn't expect to be murdered of course, but at the very least being publicly shamed is the minimum I personally would expect to see.
