Can someone smart who understands computer shit explain to me why as computers get more advanced, they somehow lose the ability to play older, super non-demanding PC games?

Even KOTOR is super hit or miss what computers will run it nowadays without jumping through hoops.

What do you have to do to get Chaos Theory working? I have it on Steam, and I remember pretty much starting it right up (been a while since I played it though). I can't recall having to do anything special to get it to run.

There's two places where you can find info on getting the game working, and it's either PCgamingwiki or the Steam guides for that game.

Im gonna 5-year-old it for you, so.. Imagine that CPUs are designed like keyboards, you've got Qwerty and Dvorak right? Lets say Qwerty is older CPUs and Dvorak is newer CPUs ("Redesigned to be more efficient~") Well the problem is; the game was programed to "push button #22" which might be X on a Qwerty and B on a Dvorak. Instead of letters on a keyboard though; its C++ instructions and calculations, etc.

Gotcha, that makes a little more sense, thanks.

It's not even old games. even new ones stop working over time

I tried to play Dragon age inquisition the other day and couldn't boot it up. it worked fine on the same PC on launch

So I fiddled with myself and changed the settings and stuff and got it to boot up when it played like shit and I had to stop.

The master race has issues

My computer was like, never able to run Jade Empire without massive amounts of lag, even on the lowest settings :/ I think Bioware just poorly optimizes their games tbh

shame because jade empire is good

WIth that in mind, is it possible to spoof an older version of windows OS to do this? Like run windows 95 or XP or something.

You can run games in compatability mode, and that often can resolve the issue, yes. At least, I could in Win7. Wouldn't be shocked if Win10 didn't. Fuck Win10.

You can use a virtual machine to emulate an older OS. I believe Oracle's VirtualBox is the best one.

I dunno if you've seen them, but it's what Vinesauce Joel uses for his Windows Destruction streams.

One of the happiest moments of my gaming life was when I finally got The Journeyman Project Turbo to work on my W7 machine.

Such a good game, and it felt so good to replay it like 15 years later.

Fortunately, the remake Pegasus Prime is on GoG, no hassle involved, if anyone has the good sense to try out this masterpiece. The Turbo version is still better (that may be nostalgia speaking lol) but I would not want to subject anyone to the hoops I had to jump through for it, even if they did manage to find a copy. Plus PP is a lot more polished and more challenging.
