There's this trope in movies where a black man can't be with a white woman unless the movie is literally about this subject like guess who's coming to dinner.

In star wars 7 it seemed like rey was developing a thing with finn. True when kylo ben takes his mask off there seems like they may have had a thing, but there was more of a partnership going with finn and rey.

Then comes episode 8. They have rey and kylo pair up together all but confirming their relationship and finn is saddled with a dumpy asian chick (not even her attractive sister who dies in the opening mission) which just adds insult to injury. Not to mention being relegated to a terribly pointless sideplot that accomplishes nothing for the series or movie's narrative.

Finn and Rey never had any romantic subtext about them. There was far more going for Poe/Finn, but Rian seemed to have a problem with that idea for some reason.

I wouldn't say Finn/Poe got axed, as JJ can easily still make it happen. It's very easy to write Rose/Finn as an unrequited love.

He did not. Finn in general doesn't really understand love or emotion, being a Storm Trooper and all. He just follows anyone that gives him the positive reinforcement he's so desperately been longing.

Iirc, that trope was REALLY prevalent up till the early 2000s... with (as TC said) the exception of movies where it was the topic/focus. Strangely, the other exceptions were if Will Smith was the leading male...

Eva Mendez was cast in Hitch as his love interest specifically because a White actress would have turned off the general public, while a Black one would have sent it into the "Black comedy" niche.

And in Hancock, I read that in the original story, the main guy got back together with his wife. In the Will Smith film, no such thing happened.

They originally wanted to get Indian actress (and once voted the most beautiful woman in the world) Aishwarya Rai as the female lead, but she turned down the role (I wonder why? >_>).

it's not a trope, it's something that Hollywood execs intentionally avoid due to the perceived notion that interracial relationships will alienate more theater-going people than it will appeal to and will cause the production to make less money for them. i'm not condoning it, i'm just saying that's how it is.

Not just any interracial relationship, though. It's mainly those that involve White women. Note that they have no problem at all with pairing White men with every kind of woman under the sun.

SW8: Finn and Phasma face off again, but now thanks to the resistance, he has had proper training and is able to fight his former commander to a standstill, he also has gained respect throughout the resistance for his deeds.

SW9: it all comes to an epic conclusion, Finn's involvement is paramount in the victory of the resistance, and in a final showdown with Phasma, he is finally able to beat her and finally sever his ties with his past...

But instead (and this is true for the entire storyline of the new trilogy), there seems no planning ahead for any character and it shits over already established lore. Old characters who should be a pillar in this series are now just throwaway characters, and the main characters aren't flashed out in the slightest, so they can have a story that plays out over 3 movies.

I know the second trilogy got a lot of flak because Jar Jar and AotC, but at least the characters were more fleshed and planned out over the course of those 3 movies.
