46 y/o Patrick Beadle, a musician from Oregon was sentenced to 8 YEARS in PRISON in Mississippi for possession of MARIJUANA that he LEGALLY bought is his state!!

Activists are outraged over the harsh sentence and state it's based on his race as well considering he was sentenced WITHOUT PAROLE as well for drug trafficking!!

He originally faced 40 years in the slammer after he had almost 3 pounds of marijuana in his car on March 7, 2017 when he was driving through Madison County.

A Jury convicted him in July and prosecutors even admitted there was no evidence he was "trafficking drugs" as he did not possess a large sum of money, drug paraphernalia other than the marijuana

He purchased the weed in Oregon where recreational use of the drug was approved in 2014 and medical marijuana was legalized in 1998. He had a medical marijuana card to treat chronic pain he suffers in both of his knees suffered from college basketball

Taking weed across state lines is illegal and in Mississippi as recreational and medical marijuana is illegal as well

He was stopped by police for crossing a fog line in the road as he was on a road trip to pay homage to blues singer B.B King in his home state but he believes he was a victim of racial profiling because of his dreadlocks and licese plate from another state.

Once stopped, police found his marijuana stash with an an ounce of medical marijuana costing 50-100 each and spent 2300 to 4600 on the load of weed..

Tommy Beadle, his mother pleaded with the judge to not send her son to prison but they ignored her cries as he said he will not reduce his charge to simple possession since he was already convicted for drug traffickign

His attorney, Cynthia Stewart says his sentence will be appealed given the US is quickly changing marijuana laws and in 5 years may not even be a crime as the American Civil Liberties Union says Beadle was stopped and given a long prison sentence based on his skin colour

The ACLU has filed a lawsuit against the Mississippi Police Department for racial bias following the case claiming black people are targeted aggressively by police

Do you agree with this sentence?

Any prison sentence that revolves around possession of marijuana is ridiculous. That being said, if I'm driving around with 3 pounds of weed in the car, I'm going to brush up on the laws of the states that I'm driving through.

It's certainly a harsh sentence for a minor offence. Still buying something legally in one place doesn't make it legal in another. Nothing todo with race.

The prohibition of marijuana makes as much sense as a prohibition on dandelions.

That being said...trying to bring 3 pounds of weed from a legal state to an illegal state 1500 miles away wasn't the best idea.

At my heaviest use, it took me over a month to burn through an ounce. The last third of that ounce...lost its charm and freshness taking precautions.

I'm having difficulty imagining what this dude was going to do with 3 pounds if he wasn't planning on selling it since weed doesn't exactly age well past a certain point. He would have had 2 pounds of what looked like oregano after a month and a half at best.

Again, I think the weed prohibition is absurd, but I'm pretty sure they have this guy on a technicality. A technicality that would never exist were it not for the ridiculous prohibition in the first place.

I doubt you can buy 3 pounds legally if you're not a licensed dealer in the state. That's distribution amounts in any state.

Still that's a huge sentence and it won't stick, he'll appeal and get a deal for much lower. He'll probably be out on probation in 18 months.

With US laws, makes sense that this happened.

Guy moved it illegally, and with everything going in, sounds like he was planning on selling it in a place it was illegal.
Even in countries where weed is fully legal on the federal level, it is illegal to sell it on the street. And obviously that is what he was doing.

Ah okay, yeah if I just read the headline then your position would be very agreeable.

I disagree with this law (marijuana laws in general) and think it's unjust and should be repealed. But if you want to fight unjust laws using civil disobedience, the way to emphasize that is by accepting the consequences and using it to illustrate that the punishment doesn't fit the crime, or that the crime itself is ridiculous and hypocritical. Quite frankly, using this case to make an issue about race, while that may (read: is) a valid argument, does absolutely nothing to denounce the crime itself, and rather points out how our justice system, on average, penalizes black men at higher rates for the same crimes committed by other demos. This infuriates me because you could very well do both. Too many people think they should break unjust laws and be free of consequences. Use the consequences and accept them to make your point. It strengthens your position, anything else weakens it.

If it was a more reasonable amount of cannabis? Then what I posted before my edit is applicable. The States absolutely needs to legalise it on a federal level.

This is a case of cruel and unusual punishment for sure, and the sentence should be overturned. Still, when something is illegal, ESPECIALLY when its about to change, you should just sit tight and wait: rules are the basis of a modern society.

As people mentioned already, nothing he did was legal, but obviously 8 years is ridiculous. Take the weed away, give him a slap on the wrist and teach him to be a little more patient. That should be the extent of it.

There's a lot of stuff that's legal but has rules around purchase/possession/usage, not just drugs/medicines. Weed being legalized doesn't make it MORE legal than all of those things.

Ah, I agree with the sentiment, but even alcohol has similar laws still. If you buy enough, you will need a sort of permit to transport that alcohol (though my understanding is that a liquor store can write it for you). The point is that you can be transporting enough of even legal substances to be regulated at least.

Really, even if weed is legal, trying to move three pounds of it across state lines may still be illegal. I'm not sure how liquor works, but I would not be surprised if it had something similar in place. Welcome to state laws.
