President Donald Trump said he hasnt made his way overseas to visit troops because hes very busy.

The president told The Associated Press in an interview published on Tuesday that hell go overseas to military bases in places like Iraq and Afghanistan at some point, but he doesnt think its overly necessary.

Ive been very busy with everything thats taking place here, Trump said, before going on a tangent, claiming that this is the greatest economy the U.S. ever had.

We have the greatest economy in the history of our country. I mean, this is the greatest economy weve ever had, best unemployment numbers, he said. Many groups are, you know, weve never even been close to these numbers. Im doing a lot of things. Im doing a lot of things. But its something Id do. And do gladly. Nobody has been better at the military. Hey, I just got them a pay raise. I havent had a pay raise in 11 years. I just got them a substantial pay raise. They meaning our military people. I just got them new equipment. They have stuff that was so old that the grandfathers used to fly it. I have done more for the military than any president in many, many years.

Trump added that he also wants to keep the troops abroad so the country stays safe.

The main thing I have to see is, I have to see safety at home, he said. If I think people are likely to do some very bad things in faraway places to our homeland, Im going to have troops there for a period of time.

Presidents often visit active military personnel. Former President Barack Obama traveled to Iraq mere months after he was inaugurated.

The 45th president hasnt totally avoided military bases around the world, having gone to both Japan and South Korea during his trip to Asia last year, but he has not been to the bases in the Middle East or elsewhere.

Despite being busy, Trump did not hesitate to offer a defense to his disparaging comments about Stormy Daniels in the interview with the AP. When the wire service asked Trump about whether it was appropriate to call her horseface, he told them they could take the nasty remark any way you want.

Ah yes, nothing like all that campaigning and feels rallies and golfing to make you "very busy".

To be fair to Trump, there is no way to answer this question that won't make him look bad.

If he says yes he is lying

And if he says no, he is heartless.

So he has to fumble an excuse.

US worship of soldiers is weird.

Trump could say he would buy every soldier a house and people would still be offended because he wore dirty shoes when giving it to them or something

I was an air traffic controller in the Air Force. Air Force One landed at one of my bases to do a quick refuel before departing, and Obama made it a point to make an unplanned visit to the tower and visit with us during he wait.

Something tells me Trump wouldnt even set foot on the airfield.

Yes, and as I explained they're primarily working trips. A few hours of golf and then basically working nonstop. Trump would have to probably take 25 or 30 trips to equal the amount of golfing in one norma leisure trip of the types that other presidents would take. So divide Trump's number of golfing trips by 25 or 30, and that's a more accurate number to compare him to other presidents. So in reality he's only done about 5 or 6 trips worth of golfing.

Speaking as a veteran, some troops would find it cool to see the president, but most would probably dread it because it would be a big dog and pony show where they have to sweep, mop, pick up trash, wear their best uniforms, make sure everything is perfect, show perfect military bearing (or be greatly disciplined by their leaders), etc.
