I've more often heard criticism of bosses having those, and that they should be limited to random encounters. :/

Though this is for turn-based RPGs, I could definitely see it being the other way around for action-based.

IDK it makes more sense as a boss in terms of "Defeat this boss before it unleashes it's aoe instant kill attack"

The first time I used the Litwur Chicken rage, Gau whipped out Quake and nuked not only the enemies but also my party. Note to self: Always use Float before using that rage.

Going back even further to the first time I played FFVI, Meltdown, or Merton under the Woolsey translation, hits everyone for a fuckton of fire damage. You might think you can wear good armor with high magic defense to leverage the spell in your favor, but what the original translation neglects to tell you is that it ignores all such defenses, and that the only way you're surviving using that spell is if you absorb fire damage of vulnerable party members are jumped when you use it. That was the first time I nuked myself in a pique of curiosity.

i can't hate instant-death attacks for the threat they provide. when you know you're going into an area with one-shotting enemies, you're nervous. all the way back to the ice cave in ff1.

in that game it served as a sort-of natural gear gate. if you don't get prorings, you're boned. it could've been handled in a more interesting way, sure.

the thing i hate most is probably any enemy type that just drains your MP and poses no other threat. swings barely hurt. can't turn all that MP they're eating into a party nuke. not interesting.

I let him do it once, just so I could say I saw it. I similarly let Seymour get overdrive in the Operation Mihen battle in FFX.

Most bosses, including quite a few of the optional superbosses, have status vunerabilities that can make a huge difference in Final Fantasy X. It's one of the great things about FFX's battle system. :D

This is also key in FFXII, especially in low level games against enemies with high attack power or permanent haste. You got to blind them and renew it every time they recover or they'll skewer you. And to make things worse they moved niho-rem to the mid-late game from the earlier clan ranks, so you need to rely on things like the Indigo Pendant and magic to apply status, which means you have to switch to and from it every time you need to apply status and it takes longer, so more opportunities to lose control of the fight.

Knowing all this makes the strategic elements of FFXII way more satisfying than it was in my original games, of end game enemy DPS is so high I have to rely on the same Decoy-Reverse strats I did in FFXII vanilla to last more than three seconds against anything stronger than Earth Tyrant. Not looking forward to that Yiazmat fight, y'all.

In DD I ran into him by accident so instead I found out that you could dodge that move by having as many dead characters in the front row as possible.

It seems that in DragonQuest games, those work on bosses. They give you a nice advantage, meaning that you don't have to level up so much. But people (including me), just level up too much and defeat bosses with attacks and attack spells. I'll have to try using them more.

That sucks too but at least you can farm more gold. If you want that unique sword back, you're starting the whole game (or at least your last save point) over.

Well-designed games will prevent that, and only let the enemy steal non-unique items like potions and shit.

Latest Etrian Odyssey games have entire classes geared around getting a status effect on your enemy so they can dish out the damage. Most of the time, you'll have more luck getting something like Poison to proc, but you can totally hit bosses with stuff like Sleep and Paralysis too.

Yeah one of the best ways to deal with the extra boss (which is incredibly- to almost impossibly hard to beat with an ingame non-specialized team) is by filling it with binds (which is another form of status) and status and using the chain killer command that attacks every time a status/bind happens.

This, especially since you often don't have access to said immunity until later in the game, so by the time you can equip it, the enemies you need it for are already bypassing it. And yeah, fuck Chac.
