Texas early vote compared to 2014:

Voters under 30 up by 508%.
Voters over 65 up 96%
Hispanic turnout up 214%
White turnout up 165%

granted i imagine voters under 30 was an abysmal number in 2014 but still that's nuts.

Congressman Steve Kings recent comments, actions, and retweets are completely inappropriate. We must stand up against white supremacy and hate in all forms, and I strongly condemn this behavior.

Some might say that this is only being said by a sitting Republican congressman because its politically expedient.

I dont care. Ill take it, and I applaud Congressman Stivers for making a statement few others in his party will.

Yes, 100%.

It is worth noting that he isn't even in a competitive district. So you can't even do the cynical "oh he's trying to court moderates but doesn't mean it". He's going to win his seat and King is in a (suddenly, possibly) competitive race. And he didn't go soft with a "insensitive" or "troubling" label. He called it white supremacy, pure and simple. I think this is a very good thing and definitely applaud him for doing so as well.

Nate Silver has indicated that the early voting numbers largely reinforce polling data but that under 30 number seems to be a bit beyond what the crosstabs are predicting. Buuuut under 30s are also way more likely to find early votinf more convenient.

There have been several local reports of voter intimidation, but I'm damn proud to see that they're not really depressing turnout

And yes, Texas voter turnout is fucking abysmal. One of the worst states in the nation, even in presidential voting years iirc.

Something that's been bothering me for a while. One talking point that I see brought up from time to time is the idea that Democratic politicians don't actually care about minorities, but they adopt the social platform that they do as a political scheme to accumulate votes from all of the various minority groups in the country.

So then my question is--even if this premise is true, why is this a bad thing?

I will mention ahead of time that what we ultimately care about are the policies that are put in place and not the feelings of the policymakers, so I'm ideally looking for something slightly more concrete than just an emotional appeal to whether or not they're being genuine.

Usually I see that talking point go further and say that either they don't actually deliver on those promises, or the ones they do are actually harmful (dependence on government, etc.)

If it stopped where you stopped it, then yeah, that wouldn't make sense.

Though I'll hypothesize that even if you did stop the talking point there a possible motive could be to simply demotivate turnout with those groups by arguing "They don't really care about you" so those voters stay home.

Though, as you note, that's explicitly not a policy argument.

I was thinking about this as well, Pyre. With regards to my "if racists, Klansmen, neo-Nazis and white nationalists all support the Republicans, the Republican party must be doing SOMETHING to court those votes" post. But these is this argument that Democrats don't do anything to help minorities, and therefore those minorities should vote Republican. It completely ignores any thinking about how Republicans would be BETTER than "Democrats do nothing" and just generally drops an emotional argument that the person making it doesn't honestly give a shit about.

It reminds me of a while back, possibly before the politics topics even started...there was a discussion of sexism in America. Ulti, a noted misogynist, interrupts the entire conversation with "If you think women have it so bad in the West, why don't you care about women being stoned to death in the Middle East?" It's a really cynical take on things, but it's somebody who does not give a shit about the argument they're making. Ulti doesn't give a FUCK about the rampant sexism and misogyny of Middle Eastern countries (outside of using it as an example to justify his racism and Islamaphobia), but it's a way to shut up discussion of gender relations in the West by appealing to liberals and making them look just as uncaring as he is. It's just extremely disingenuous overall. That's where this "Dems don't help minorities" mentality comes into play. The speaker doesn't give a shit about minorities, but if they can paint it like NOBODY cares about minorities, then they're no longer the bad guys, and they don't need to change their ways.

If you view the world as a zero-sum game, then any policy that helps minorities must be hurting white people. If Democrats don't even care about minorities, then they're inflicting suffering on whites for no reason other than selfish personal gain. This is especially bad if for those who believe (like most white Americans do) that the biggest racial problem in modern America is discrimination against whites; from that perspective, Democrats are just hurting the real victims even more.

Half of Americans in a Public Religion Research Institute poll last June said they believe discrimination against whites is as big a problem as discrimination against blacks and other minorities. But that number is bolstered by almost six in 10 whites (57%) and two-thirds of white working-class Americans (66%). A broad majority of blacks and Hispanics disagree.

Yeah. I bet you do believe that. Because all people who don't agree with you are racists. Surprising.

But, I'll listen.

Tell me exactly where in this ad (I haven't looked at it) where he says someone is inferior because of their race (not their lack of citizenship - their race). Expresses desire to commit crime or enslave or so on to people based on their race (not their lack of citizenship - race). Where he says white people specifically are a superior race. Etc.
