Everybody glorifies cushy office jobs as some sort of symbol of personal achievement, because doing literally anything else means you're too uneducated or unskilled to get a "real" job.

The reality is that office jobs suck. You have to come in at the exact same time as everybody else, meaning you're on the road with millions of other drivers who can't drive and you're already fed up with the day before you've even clocked in. You're mandated to stay there for an 8-hour shift, but statistically speaking, you'll realistically be done with your actual work after only 4 hours if you're actually productive and don't just browse Facebook and GameFAQs to kill the time. But if you do end up finishing early, your boss will just dump more busy work on top of your head that will literally bore you to tears.

Susan from Accounting won't stop barging into your office to rant about some random bullshit that just gives her an excuse to talk about herself and her family problems for 5 minutes. But you put up with it anyway because even the slightest of human interaction will make you feel like a real person that exists and not a robot.

Office jobs are buttcheeks.

I'm on salary and I come and go when I want. You sound like someone who's never had an office job.

That's true of almost every job. And the ones that don't usually have something shittier to make up for it.

I actually did, and left because I wanted to feel alive.

You don't know my story, man.

I've done both, and I wouldn't say they are 'awful', just that they have different pros and cons. For example, they are physically less demanding, but usually mentally more demanding. Sometimes they come with much more pressure, too. There is good and bad to both.

To be fair, the last five of those you could have without an office job.

Can confirm, but I'm on the bottom rung. If you're the type of person to leverage your skills to get a cushy job it seems pretty good.

Besides that, tc isn't exaggerating.

There's a lot of good looking girls in my office. It's great. Im able to easily corner them and force them to talk to me for long periods of time. Sometimes they even brush against me a little bit when they suddenly remember that they need to be somewhere else.

Oh God, I'm almost forgot about the blatant sexual harassment.

I also loved having an entire 2 hours of training devoted to reminding me to not sexually molest my coworkers.

Right now I work as a sub. Custodial to teacher/office aide.
I would rather work in custodial and grounds any day of the week than be stuck in a room with the "professional" types. I dread when I have to be in the office. You have to dress nicer, make small talk answer the phone and be mindful of the way the person I'm filling in for has their desk or how they manage their paperwork to keep it organized. Or worse when it's unorganized.

Versus for the most part working alone most of the day/night. Dress in street clothes. Shorts in the summer and a tee shirt. Walk around a lot. Go outside a lot. Downside to that is if it's really hot or raining.

I wouldnt want any job where Im at work during standard work hours. Fighting traffic every time you go to/from work, having to fight crowds any time you want to go do anything on your off days because everyone else is off on Saturdays and Sundays, too. One of the only things I love about having a retail job is Im usually off some time during the week, so places that I go usually arent very crowded.

Or food service, or manual labor like factories and warehouses, or call centers. The list goes on.

There are plenty of different types of office jobs, it's not really fair to lump them all together. I don't see people glamorizing them as much as you seem to think anyway. The reality is just that the average person isn't going to have an amazing job, and pretty much every common alternative to office jobs is even worse.

I don't like the typical 8 or 9 to 5 hours, but I'd rather have a set schedule each day than being assigned sporadic shifts, having to deal with flaky co-workers who constantly bail on shifts or ask you to switch them at the last minute, etc.
