I do think the essential "death" of the series probably hurts MGS like it has evidently hurt Mass Effect, especially with MGSV being a game this site didn't embrace. I was hoping MGSV being a game that at least a subset of the fanbase (even if it was only a distinct minority) loved dearly would help it to an extent, but it apparently didn't!

I think this does tell us that the state of a series matters, especially if you've hit the end of it. Both MGS and ME died in shame, and they're suffering for it.

Netflix renaissance! Plus, I don't recall Castlevania coming to an end the way MGS and ME did, but I don't keep up with the series. I think a series can be defunct and still be popular just as long as it doesn't have some sort of shame attached to it, like how Chrono Trigger suddenly became massively popular again.

Tomoya's reaction to his father being imprisoned followed by his proposal to Nagisa got me just enough to register the counter. Bittersweet relationships between fathers and sons have always resonated with me for personal reasons (although my relationship with my dad was never bad. It just never was what I wanted it to be).

Yoshino's backstory almost got me, but I narrowly avoided it.

I mean you're not really supposed to like him, which is what makes it relatable if you had a complicated relationship with your dad, in my opinion. Tomoya doesn't really handle all of that the best, but it's understandable why he wouldn't.

I have an extremely normal family (out of all the people I know I'd rank my family among the most normal), so stuff with complicated family relationships doesn't quite click with me in that way.

I think the breaking his arm thing just never quite fit with the rest. They could've addressed him being a bad father without that. That sort of abuse is pretty over the top.

Well, Tomoya's broken arm and messed up shoulder is an important detail in who he is as a character. It establishes why he is the way he is at the beginning of the story.

Also I don't think a parent abusing their child in a drunken rage is as uncommon as you might think. You'd just never hear about it, for obvious reasons.

in the slowest playthrough update of all time, I finished Chapter 2 of Trails of Cold Steel!

first of all: While I still prefer the Sky/Crossbell orbments, wow letting my physical characters have four different status effects at 10% feels amazing. I can't wait until I have 20% (or even higher!) probability status effects, because then I'm getting status effects more often than not. Since they've gone with bosses simply taking status effects for one turn (instead of being immune) this time around, it might actually be viable into lategame nightmare? Or we'll just encounter things that are 100% immune in the near future and that'll be that.

Storyline-wise, we're still in the early-goings, and with 9 characters plus Sara (plus Towa/Crow/etc.) the early-goings are gonna take a while. And I mean it's a four-game series I knew what I was getting into, but still. I would've liked for a stronger feel of where the overall plot was going beyond the "spoilers" I know from the Crossbell games. Though based on random NPC comments and newspapers it looks like we're already at Ao on the timeline, which is further ahead than I thought we'd be at this point, but given the events in the prologue I guess this makes sense...

As for the individual characters, Machaias and Junus's arc was so cliched that I couldn't really get into it, and Fie's drop of "yeah I'm a Jaeger" was so obvious to me and so understated that it was hard for it to really affect me. On the other hand, Emma apparently knows magic?! There's been some hints of magic before in the series, but I can't recall anything like this. So that random bombshell got my mind whirring, at least.

Oh and the lovebirds who live across from the dorm are wonderful and awesome and nothing better ever happen to them or else.

Also I may or may not have hacked my ToCS save file to give myself more free time points I regret nothing.

Especially stacked on top of crafts that come with innate status effect chances. The way it calculates is "broken" in your favor too, at least with Delay (and at least in CS2, though I assume it calculates the same in CS1.)

also wow no shoutouts to actual best NPC Vivi. But yeah, that NPC couple in Trista is cute.

Trails of Cold Steel has a fair and balanced combat system.

Also yes Vivi is the best. Legit top 10 character in the game I don't even care.

Battles in CS are much better than in the other Trails games.

The presentation and speed certainly makes them "feel" better, but the difficulty and tactics have the Sky trilogy (SC and especially GOAT 3rd) ahead in those regards.

Trails was never really a hard game though so I can totally see thinking the advantages Sky having their don't really amount to much and taking Cold Steel over them.
