I don't know why any private citizen would need something that size. I can't imagine many private citizens need a 1 TB harddrive. This is for big companies, and perhaps groups doing research, and they need to store tons of data on their computer(s).

A few TB could be useful for PC gamers, especially with games growing larger and larger. But unless they're literally never deleting games they don't play anymore, I can't see 100TB being needed.

People who have lots of 1080p and 4K porn and if games keep being 100 GB download files it might be needed as well.

I have all my various school software (autocad, visual studio, etc), games, and music software (daws, vsts) on one computer, so having a shit ton of space would be nice

Article in OP is from this week it also mentions WD is working on something similar but no timetable for them. Last year WD said they were hoping to put out 100 TB drives in the 2030's maybe Segate might inspire them to move up that timeline and put it out sooner.

and that's just one of the many fun things that can easily fill out a small 1TB drive in a heartbeat.
