I'd say they were a failure. I mean, the GOP had both the House and the Senate, but although it retained the Senate, it lost the House. How is slipping politically, to say nothing of losing one of the two main legislative chambers a victory? I'm not sure it was a complete disaster, because obviously it wasn't, since the Republicans still have the Senate, and the Dems don't have the House by a big majority, but it still seems like a failure for Trump.

Its a bit of both.

They lost the house but that was expected. The reason they can celebrate is that they didn't lose the house as bad as they were projected to lose and they increased their hold on the Senate. There were also some state races like in Florida where the dems were projected to win but didn't.

Everything that happened was expected. Only huge surprise was Donnelly getting murdered in Indiana but he was a pro Trump Dem so fuck him.

This gives the Democrats time to hopefully get their shit together.

But for at least 2 years there wont be a repeal of the ACA and no new tax cuts for rich people.

Dems took the house, which was expected, but not by the margin they were hoping for. Republicans took some seats in the senate, which was also expected, particularly since most seats up for election were dems.

The house flipping is a win for the left, but the margins should be sobering. GOP entenchment tactics are working and a lot of people still support them enough to come out and vote. Thatll probably mean another four years of Trump.

Trump is part of the environment that brought a blue wave in the first place, and obviously losing the house is bad.

But the places he targeted with his campaigning generally worked out for him, and just by the nature of things the seats he loses are seats with the LEAST Trumpian candidates, so he'll have less people in his party standing up to him

This was a mixed result. The Democrats come out a bit ahead(what with winning back control of the House of Representatives and all), but the Senate results *were* a bit disappointing for them, as was Andrew Gillum's (somewhat) surprising loss in the Florida gubernatorial election.
They did; however, make some impressive gains on the state level(Florida notwithstanding), including complete control of New Mexico, Colorado, New York, and Connecticut.

I really don't get these results... the only way for Trump to win would have been to retain/gain more seats in both the House and the Senate?

The mid terms arent designed for one side to lose or win everything. This was the outcome that he and the rest of the republicans had hoped for. The blue wave would have been disasterous, but it did not occur.

The blue wave was on its way and it was thanks to Trump's hard work that we averted it. He turned the blue wave into a blue light drizzle.

What meltdown. I'm glad we have a more government of checks and balances in case Trump does do something crazy. I actually realize both parties need to be in the government for that reason and, gasp, actually world together. But, from my experience, things work better when the Democrats are the checks and the Republican ls are the balance

Exactly. What occurred with the House is not out of historical trends and norms.

During Obama's first midterm, his party lost 63 seats.

Exactly. This isn't really a win or loss by either party. It's just a trend that always happens.

It was a success for Trump in the sense that when you compare the midterm to the last several presidents, they all lost significantly more seats. Gaining in the Senate is also huge, and high-profile celebrity backed candidates failed.

It is also a loss, but not that bad nationally.

What I'm sad about locally is Illinois has gone totally blue. We're fucked and about to be taxed to oblivion and have our property values plummet.

You mean we knew something that's happened since the start of the country? When Republicans are president, people vote Democrat. When Democrats are president, people vote Republican. I mean, who knows exactly why. My guess is people are never happy so they vote against the party in power. I feel that's a fair guess and history does support that theory.

The GOP made gains in the Senate. Whether 2 or 3 seats we don't know. We'll have to wait for AZ to come in.

The GOP lost the House for the first time in about a decade and also lost control of a bunch of gubernatorial positions and statehouses. The midwest also seems to be moving back towards the Democrats.

Those state positions will be very important for redistricting in 2020

So I'd say a bit of both for now.

If the Dems can come through in AZ and keep their losses minimized to 2 seats then I'd say it leans into a failure for Trump.
