34. Jacob Derwin (Survivor: Ghost Island, 19th Place)

At the time of his elimination, I ranked Jacob as one of the worst characters of Ghost Island. I hated how much he made the first two episodes of the season revolve around him. However, after watching the whole season play out, while I still find him slightly annoying, I cant deny that he was one of the more entertaining personalities in this awful cast. In just two episodes, you had Jacob pouring the tribes rice into his sock in search of an idol clue, playing mind games with the other tribe to get sent to Ghost Island (possibly saving his ass at the first tribal council), making up a story about an idol, revealing that story to be false, and somehow getting blindsided despite there being literally NO reason for them to keep him around. It was just a bumbling trainwreck in a season that DESPERATELY needed bumbling trainwrecks, and Im okay with that.

33. James Lim (Survivor: Ghost Island, 15th Place)

I dont have a whole lot to say about James, because admittedly, he was a very quiet and dignified character. When he fucked up during the second immunity challenge, he took responsibility and was willing to take the fall if need be. But his tribe gave him a second chance, and he went on to play a huge role in pushing for the Morgan boot, aka the best episode of the season. It was a nice transition, honestly. James went from honorable guy who was okay with falling on his swordto cutthroat willing to backstab two opposing alliance to ensure the best outcome for HIS game (which also hurt Libbys game as well, for an additional win.) Unfortunately, he got swapfucked in the worst way and was an easy target for the Naviti girls, whod already bonded with Michael over him. Still, he was nice, and slightly more interesting than your average Ghost Island cast member.

32. Wendell Holland (Survivor: Ghost Island, 1st Place)

With the sole exception of HHH, in terms of vote-based reality shows, this was the year of the bitter jury. Ghost Island, Celebrity Big Brother, and Big Brother 20 all featured a dominant mastermind player that ran the season and made it all the way to the finals, only to lose to their less strategic second-in-command. And in all three instances, I LOVED it. Sure, Marissa still sucked, but at least she wasnt ROSS. Sure, Kaycee was the best option of a bad batch, but at least she wasnt TYLER. But in the case of one Wendell Holland, Jr.hes the only one of the three winners that I currently like for who he is, not just because he beat Domenick in the finals. I mean, it helps that I dont currently hate Domenick (well see how Im feeling a few years down the line, when the feeling of the season was so boring that anyone with a personality was a welcome addition wears off like it did in Redemption Island), but Wendell was fine in his own right.

As it stands, Wendell was a nice, calm, rational guy who was friendly with most of the people around camp and played a strong social game. He used his furniture-building know-how to craft comforts around camp that made a particularly dreary season all the more amenable for his fellow tribe mates. While Domenick was the face of their alliance, running around and making fake idols and whatnot, Wendell bounced ideas off him and found an idol of his very own. What can I say, I enjoyed the Domenick/Wendell bromance and found their friendly rivalry enjoyable to watch. The ONE decent aspect of the endgame was that they both made it to the finals, so we got that tie vote at the very end, which at least give a blip of a pulse to this lifeless season.

So ultimately, Wendell was a fine winner, and though he had his moments in the middle of the season where his dominance (alongside Domenick) became a bit overbearing, it was never SO stifling that it turned me against him outright. Was he the best character of the season? Of course not. He was far too normal. But he was a completely satisfying winner at the very least.

31. Desiree Afuye (Survivor: Ghost Island, 11th Place)

I think that, more than anyone in Ghost Island, Desiree got absolutely fucked over by the editors. In a cast devoid of personality, Des had a spark to her. She had some fire in her eyes and seemed willing to speak her mind. Hell, thats what got her voted out: she tried to flip the script on the dominant majority. Unfortunately, the editors needed the audience to know just how skillfully Dom and Wendell were running the show, so anything not expressly dedicated to furthering their narrative was left on the cutting room floor. I have no doubt that there are a plethora of Des confessionals we lost out on, and are worse off for not having heard.

But yeah, Desirees boot episode, while part of the inevitable slog towards a Wendell or Domenick victory, still serves to spice up this dull season just a little bit. For starters, you have Des coming off the Chris blindside, where she voted in the minority and realized she was on the outs with Naviti. So she gets it in her mind to pick up the Malolos and try to flipagainst Kellyn. This is where I think the editors did their worst injustice. Des and Kellyn were on a tribe together the entire pre-merge, through two swaps. They clearly had a friendship, so we should CARE that Des wanted to betray her ally.

But yeah, Des decided to target Kellyn for no reason other than BIG MOVEZ, and honestly? For as much fun as Des personality was, Im glad she got got. It always brings me joy to see the BIG MOVEZ for the sake of BIG MOVEZ players fall flat on their face. Zeke in two seasons, Ciera, Stephen, Spencer in Cambodia. I just want Survivor to go back to the time when blindsides were actually EXCITING and not just EXPECTED every single episode. And if players are punished for making unnecessary moves for the sake of their rsums, then GOOD. It sucks that Des had to be a sacrifice for this, but still, GOOD.

And rounding out the string of Ghost Island eliminations (while simultaneously putting me up to the point in my list where I no longer have any write-ups already posted because I've passed the highest ranking that darkx ranked low)...

hDCjCpa
30. Kellyn Bechtold (Survivor: Ghost Island, 7th Place)

Kellyn is like one of those jokes where you tell it once and kinda laugh, tell it again and nothing, tell it a third time, and you get annoyed. But then after a certain point, the joke keeps getting repeated over and over so much that it loops back around to being hilarious. Thats Kellyns story in a nutshell. So this season was pretty much Dom/Wendell in their bromance, Laurel/Donathan in their alliance, Michael representing Malolo, and Kellyn representing the non-Dom/Wendell faction of Naviti. Seriously, those six were pretty much the only relevant characters of the season, plus Chris, who was off in his own world.

The problem with Kellyn at first was that her storyling episode after episode was Im sticking Naviti strong! And while yes, thats smart gameplay and you WANT to stick true to your alliance (especially if youre comfortably in the majority), its boring to watchat least when the personalities are bland. So at the start of the season, Kellyn was kinda quirky (she was Ghost Islands equivalent of an Aubry or a Hannah), but she quickly wore on me, especially as Naviti dominated the tribe swaps and picked off all the interesting Malolos in favor of Michael, Jenna and Libby. But at a certain point, my hatred for Kellyn shifted and did a complete 180.

In a lot of ways, Kellyn is like Donathan, in that the season was SO MUCH a boring slog towards the inevitable Dom/Wendell/Laurel end game that just having someone oppose them made me feel happier. But unlike Donathan, who had hints of BIG MOVEZ style gameplay in his opposition, Kellyn felt far more realistic. From the Libby boot onward, Kellyn became this paranoid force, constantly shrieking and trying to get her way strategically, because she saw that train coming, but just couldnt get her car started and off the tracks. The tears, the emotions, and the meltdowns were hilarious at a point in the season where you had bland Laurel, bland Sebastian, and bland Angela marching in lock step behind the dominant alpha males.

Ultimately, Kellyn was a light of personality during a dingy part of the season, and she went on to lead the jury in fighting back against Domenicks I played the hardest, therefore I was the best narrative. She wasnt a great character the whole season, but she was good enough to warrant a DECENT placement on this list.

28. Rachel Swindler (Big Brother 20, 12th Place)

Of Level 6, Rachel was really the only one who was thoroughly good as a character by the time she got evicted. And even then, she spent the first four weeks as so much of a background character that she got the crap app to have Bretts grandmother yell at her for 24 hours. But she managed to elevate herself to stardom with a virtuoso performance in that final week of her game. She took the position Winston found himself in, and while he was slightly paranoid, he was still relatively calm and rationalRachel did not do that. And it made her all the better as a character.

SoBayleigh wins HoH and wants to put Rachel up as a pawn. Rachel is nervous about this, and understandably so, because she knows what happened to the pawn when Winston was put up against Brett. But at least she manages to guilt Bayleigh into telling her about her power app, right? AND Bayleigh trusts her enough to reveal that she thinks Tyler is trying to turn against Angela. This is Rachels downfall, unfortunately. Shes paranoid, shes nervous, and shes worried that Tyler is playing her, so she tells Angela what Bayleigh told her. And despite the fact that Rachel has been reliable up until that point, suddenly she becomes public enemy number one for Level 6, because Tyler is a dick and Angela is a bitch.

For the rest of the week, Rachels paranoid ass is stuck on the block, unaware that shes going home over Brett until Julie calls her name. And she just strides out of the house in the second-best exist I can recall (the first being Cody stomping over the table and marching out without saying anything to anyone). Shes so shellshocked that Julie had to pretty much drag answers out of her during the post-eviction interview, and everything culminates in her having a near-breakdown when she realizes that the people she trusted the most were the ones who stabbed her in the back. Oh yeah, and What the fuck is wrong with Angela? after that awful goodbye message.

That one week was more entertaining than anything the entire rest of Level 6 did all season long, and it made me wish we got more of Rachel, if only to spice up a bland alliance.

27. Bayleigh Dayton (Big Brother 20, 11th Place)

I fully admit that Bayleigh has some definite problems as a character. She was loud and aggressive and made some major fuck-ups that she never really had the good grace to acknowledge. And as much as I hate JC, I fully admit that her reaction to him using the N-word didnt paint her in a very good light (and allowed Level 6 fans to shit on her and call her a bigot while ignoring JCs blatantly awful tendencies.) I also find her relationship with Swaggy to be exceptionally disturbing. Apparently he DID get her pregnant, but she had a miscarriageand then he proposed to her after they knew each other for less than a month, and she accepted on live television. Yeaaaaaaahno.

All that being said, the season NEEDED someone like Bayleigh. Like, Angela sucked because she was cast to be this hot, bitchy girl and she was mainly just a high school mean girl, talking shit behind peoples backs. Bayleigh was the villainous character Angela SHOULD have been. She started out the season bitching out Tyler for playing strategically in the opening HoH competition (and trying to browbeat him into doing what she wanted that first week.) She also got in good with Swaggy, who treated her like his plus one, despite not actually including her in his alliance. But then when he got booted in week two, Bayleigh needed to regroup and assess the situation, which she didright up until she earned the third power app.

Now, Bayleigh played DECENTLY for the few weeks after Swaggy left. It was a lot like Jessica in the immediate aftermath of Codys eviction. But then she won a crapshoot HoH competition, and she got perhaps the biggest case of HoHitis of the season. She wanted Brett gone, she hated Brett, and she held court in her HoH room, browbeating FOUTTE into obeying her every whim. She put up a pawn that she actually wanted to work with, because she wanted to work with Kaycee/Angela MORE, and spilled a ton of information to Rachel unnecessarily, which got around to the rest of Level 6 (keep in mind, even FOUTTE didnt know the information Bayleigh was spilling.)

So we get to week 6, and Angela wins HoH. Bayleigh, so desperate to be accepted into the cool kids alliance, vows not to hurt Angelas week in any way, so she doesnt use her power app (when she really needed to, and perhaps MIGHT have, if not for the Hacker comp being stupidly added into the season.) The plan is in place to backdoor Bayleigh, and it goes off without a hitch after everyone blames her for the Hacker nomination. Bayleigh breaks down of course (and I should also point out that this is the week where she acused Rockstar of betraying the alliance to save Brettwhich is fucking hilarious to me and needed to be said), and again, she guilts Haleigh into coming clean about her Hacker win.

This leads to one of the ONLY real fights and dramatic moments of the season, where Bayleigh gets so incensed by Tyler lying (and while I dont think he wasthe way he worded his pitch definitely made it seem like he was) that she starts shrieking and getting higher and higher pitched until she bleeds from the mouth. It was awesome and hilarious, and the sliding door slam just added to the comedy. From that point on though, Bayleighs in the jury house, where she was able to stew and marinate in her bitterness, and it led to her casting one of the deciding votes against Tyler, which I love. After bitching about FOUTTE all season long, it brings me so much joy to see the fans golden boy taken out by that same, bitter, emotional alliance. Bayleigh as the jury foreman did that, and it was great.

Mostly just getting to the top 25...

d6nBGaC
26. Joe Mena (Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, 8th Place)

Joe is an interesting case for me, because I feel like, IF hed ever been in a position of power (outside of episode four), I probably wouldnt like him or appreciate him at all. Basically, Joe was cast to be the second coming of Tony Vlachos (well, THIRD, since Tony himself was the second coming of Tony in Game Changers), and he lived up to that reputation. Found an idol early on, stirred up shit on his original tribe (although its entirely possible he pissed them off to put a target on his back). And when he successfully played his idol in episode 4 (even though it was impossible NOT to successfully play it, given the tiebreaker rules), he was very Tony-esque with his whole post-idol performance (I read your EYES, baby girl).

However, what worked with Joe is that, come the merge, he was down in numbers and burned his idol the round Jessica got voted out. And thats where a character like Joe works best, as a thorn in the side of a majority alliance. Somehow, he managed to outlast Desi and Cole to stick it out with Mike as one of the last Healers standing, and at that point, he began pushing his anti-Ben narrative hard. He trolled Ben about his honesty as a marine, and it led to some humanizing of Ben (who bordered on being too deified for his military service.)

Better than that though, was the two-episode downfall of Joe, because the rest of the tribe built him up so much, like he finally had a chance, only to tear him down in one fell swoop. He survived the final nine by a timely flip against JP, and he thought he was on top of the world, getting cocky about how Ben was next. And Ben played the role of a betrayed bottom-feederRIGHT up until Joe got blindsided in a 4-2-2 split. So rarely do we get the cocky, overplaying mastermind taken out by some high-level gameplay in its own right. And I loved it. Of course, he then led the charge to reward Ben for finding idols and making firebut you cant win em all, can you?

While production has made some questionable returnee choices like Brad Culpepper in recent years, for the most part, I feel like they're never lacking in potential male All-Stars. A thirteenth boot from an unpopular season isn't necessarily a lock, no matter how big of a character he was.

As for Chris being on an all-star season, from 32-present alone there are at least 9 guys I'd put ahead of him on the priority list, excluding winners and those that have already returned/are returning (also pending 37's winner) - Jay S, Ryan, Devon, Dr. Mike, Joe M, Domenick, Donathan, Christian, and John H. Considering they'll have 38 and 39 to pick from too (this is assuming 40 is an all-star season), and Michael Y. is probably on par with Chris AND placed higher in the same season, the outlook isn't good.

25. Mike Zahalsky (Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers 5th Place)

Mike is a weird one for me, because on paper, he should fit the same kind of niche that Ryan filled on the Hustler Tribe. He was clearly the outlier on a tribe made up of young, pretty girls, Cole, and Joe. And this instantly made him into this dorky outcast who was quirky and Woody Allen-esque, always hovering between being safe and being in danger, depending on just how much sway Joe really had over the rest of the tribe. As a result, Mike kinda became this doofus background character for most of the pre-merge, only really rising up when he became the swing vote between showmance Cole/Jessica and fan favorites Ben/Lauren.

Post-merge though, by sheer virtue of being SUCH a dork, Mike managed to avoid most of the anti-Healer sentiment, outlasting Jessica, Desi, Cole and Joe while ingratiating himself within the opposition alliance just a little bit. Sure, he burned his idol in an outright confusing situation, but then he eventually LITERALLY burned Laurens idol that she gave to him as a sign of good faith. Also, despite their early rivalry, Mike eventually found common ground with Joe as fellow outsiders, and they became the Coconuts alliance, which was cute in its own way. Overall, Mike was a friendly guy with a quirky personality, and he never got so much screen time as to become an overbearing character. But in the grand scheme of HHH, he just wasnt quite memorable enough to earn a higher placement.

24. Henry & Evan (The Amazing Race 30, 2nd Place)

Were at the top 25 of my list and were only JUST eliminating the first member of TAR30s final five, which I think says a lot about the quality of the season overall. And really, the only reason Henry & Evan even rank this low is just because they stand out as slightly more negative (and a little robotic) compared to how much I enjoyed the other four teams that surrounded them in the final five. They werent QUITE as fun, but they still had several fun moments that keep them high in my estimation.

So while most of the cast (or at least the competent cast) were champions in a physical sense, Henry & Evan were certainly cast to be mental champions as debaters fromI wanna say Yale? But this definitely set them apart from the rest of the cast, because they were a little bit arrogant and a little less social than the final three alliance formed by Jody/NASCAR/Skibots. I say them, but it was definitely more Evan than Henry. Thats the thing that SHOULD have propelled this team to greater heights. I LOVE couple dynamics on the Amazing Race where you have a dominant female personality (usually coming across as bitchy) and a beleaguered male partner. Flo & Zach, Vanck & Ashton, Brooke & Scottits just a fun inversion of typical gender roles.

The thing is that Evan wasnt QUITE good enough as an individual character to really get me on her side, and Henry was a bit too flat in his personality for me to enjoy him as a henpecked boyfriend. I can totally buy these two being aloof and distant from the rest of the cast, to the point where they got U-Turned out of spite rather than out of strategy, but they just werent quite over-the-top enough for me to get fully onboard with them. That being said, they definitely had their moments. I felt bad for them in episode two when they got stuck in the bullshit of the head-to-head twist, and when they DID get U-Turned, it allowed Evan to become a bit feistier and aggressive towards the other teams. Thats always appreciated.

Finally, I said it before and Ill say it again. There is a scene during the final roadblock where Henry HAS the right answer and all he needs to do is call the judge over and he wins a million dollars with his girlfriend. And he instead fucks up the puzzle again and gets it wrong. And I just wish there was a camera in his/Evans room at that moment to capture to slow turn of her head and the ensuing death glare when she realizes that he cost her all that money. Poor Henry, even after the race, I cant imagine that ending well for him.

23. Ashley Nolan (Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, 6th Place)

Its amazing to me that Ashley became as big of a character as she was, and in fact, her edit is one of the reasons why Im not 100% against HHH like I could be. See, on paper, Ashley isnot the most attractive young girl Survivor could possibly cast. Shes not UGLY, but when you compare her to Simone, Jessica, Desi and Ali from this same season, shes very average. And I feel like when Survivor casts young women, theyre looking for sex appeal above all else, and any strategic acumen is just a pleasant surprise. In other words, I feel like Ashley was cast to be fodder for the players producers liked more.

However, Ashley is a lot like Jaime Dugan in China, in that by all rights, she shouldve been relegated to the background of the seasonBUT by sheer virtue of inserting herself into important moments, she got herself a solid edit. First, she aligned herself with the only other young person on the Heroes Tribe, which made people think they were a showmance and got Ashley targeted as a decoy boot against Katrina. Frightened by this vision of her role, she tried her best to distance herself from JPbut fortunately for her, the Heroes won the next few immunity challenges.

In a hilarious bout of irony, Ashleys rival from the Heroes Tribe, Alan, wound up on her team after the swap, and she had to rely on him as a close ally against the Joe/Desi duo. Sure, she had Devon (whose surfer mentality meshed well with her lifeguard status), but it didnt matter if she couldnt keep Alan in check. But they kissed and made upJUST in time for Joe to play an idol and take Alan out, because Joe fears other alpha males. Somehow, the girl who would NORMALLY be the victim of such idol play managed to survive, and subsequently make the merge.

From there, Ashley kinda fell into the role youd expect from someone of her archetypejust a number in a larger alliance. Joe even went to her and called her a sheep at one point. So what does Ashley do? She joins a counter-alliance and helps blindside the dominant group on the tribe, and then takes out Joe right after. Girl was making MOVES, AND she was making moves that actively benefitted her. She waited until the right time to flip and then flipped to better her position, which is SO much more impressive than just making moves to build a rsum.

Of course, Ashley flew too close to the sun by targeting Ben just a LITTLE too early (and being open about it as well.) The alliance shouldve stuck together and booted either Ryan or Chrissy, THEN think about taking out Ben when they have the numbers. That mightve alleviated Bens paranoia and prevented his eventual idol spree as well. This misstep led to Laurens boot, and then Ashley immediately after (in a bizarre choice since again, Mike was the biggest threat for the majority at that point.) Still, it gave us a HILARIOUS Ponderosa video, and Ashley voted for Chrissy to win, so it all works out in the end I suppose.

22. Brandi Glanville (Celebrity Big Brother 1, 7th Place)

Brandis sole role in this season was to serve as a drunken whirlwind of unhinged fury, and I think she filled that role well. Within an episode, shed already established herself as a righteous opponent to James Maslows bullshit, not giving a fuck about his role in Big Time Rush, or whatever the fuck gives him his celebrity status. From that point on, every episode felt like it needed to include some scene of Brandi getting drunk and bashing James, or just generally behaving in a belligerent fashion. This amused me, obviously.

Unfortunately, Celebrity Big Brother came on the heels of Big Brother 19, and it followed the same pattern that BB19 did. You had your Paul (Ross) who built a strong alliance and alienated outsiders (Keshia/Omarosa/Shannon), and he made a bunch of two-person alliances to insulate himself while simultaneously turning the rest of the house against each other. Brandi was an easy puppet to manipulate into going against James/Mark, and then she became disposable when she opted to cast a pity vote for Shannon to stay in round three. Sure, she tried to hook up with Omarosa to get the all-girls thing going again, but she just got wrecked when Ross railroaded her a few rounds later.

I dunno. Brandi had all the makings of being a fun character in terms of her personality, but her gameplay just dampened that volatility. She wasnt good enough at competitions to be valuable to anyone, and she wound up getting booted relatively early into the season, only to turn around and cast one of the few non-bitter votes for Ross to win. She just isnt a perfect character to me, so I feel compelled to rank her lower than perhaps she deserves.

21. Jessica Johnston (Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, 12th Place)

Jessica is yet another in a long line of girl whos closely aligned with an alpha male, but people are either afraid of him having an idol, or think hes needed for challenges boots on Survivor. But while sometimes this archetype leads to a Mary Sartain getting completely ignored, Jessica was a fun character. It definitely helped that she was the straight man to Coles vapid stupidity. They hooked up early on, but it soon became clear that Cole was a complete idiot when it came to strategy, and Jessica didnt want to get stuck dealing with his shit. Episode after episode, it amused me to watch an exasperated Jessica wishing she hadnt decided to showmance the only cute guy on her tribe. She definitely had a good head on her shoulders, but that showmance still bit her in the butt when she became an easy default boot at the merge. I still liked her though and could see her making a big improvement if she came back for another season.

20. Cedric & Shawn (The Amazing Race 30, 9th Place)

We only got four episodes of these two, but they managed to prove themselves as lovable fan favorites in their brief stint on the show. The cast had a bit of an imbalance in terms of the gender ratio, but much like TAR23, the MM cast was actually pretty good (although unlike TAR23, there wasnt a truly terrible MM team like the Afghanimals to go WAY too deep in the season.) As such, Cedric & Shawn never reached a point where they frustrated me. They were mostly bottom-feeders, but still managed to keep things interesting through their incompetence in episode 1 (breaking a rule that I feel other teams have broken and didnt get penalized for), or just struggling with the physical aspect of being the oldest team on a highly-physical leg 3. These two just always kept a positive attitude despite the season not going their way, and I appreciated that they ran the race the way they wanted to and added some positivity before the more aggressive teams began to bristle at once another.

19. Ariadna Gutierrez (Celebrity Big Brother 1, 3rd Place)

Ari was a surprise in this season. In a cast filled with volatile personalities and giant egos, Ari wound up being the only real sweetheart in the cast. She was above-average in competitions, even going so far as to win the third HoH, and I appreciated the fact that, despite her turning against Shannon as part of Rosss dumb bullshit, she was at least straight-forward about it. I appreciate when an HoH puts up the players they want out straight away, instead of backdooring, because it means instead knowing the outcome of the week as early as Saturday (although again, CBB had a weird schedule), theres a CHANCE of things getting switched up. But yeah, Ari was likable, she had the balls to make a big move without pussyfooting around it, and she had a fun little ho-mance with Brandi. The only real shame was Ari getting cut JUST shy of the endgame, giving us an awful final two. But still, she lightened the mood in an extreme dour house, and I appreciated that.

18. Chrissy Hofbeck (Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, 2nd Place)

Chrissys a weird one because she seems like the kind of player I SHOULD love unconditionally, but there are just certain aspects of her personality that Im unable to overlook, thus landing her lower than perhaps she deserves compared to other HHH castaways that place higher. Throughout the pre-merge, I was all aboard Team Chrissy. Shes right in that wheelhouse of players Im almost guaranteed to love: an older woman whos kinda snarky and manages to overcome their early stigma that might otherwise characterize her as weak. Despite being an obvious target, she kept her head down and played it smart, managing to avoid the early drama and wiggle her way into a solid alliance.

This continued after the swap, as she bonded with Ryan over his gifting of an immunity idol to her on the first day. Together, the duo roped in JP and managed to shanghai Roark and Ali out of the game. While normally Id hate anyone that willingly aligns themselves with Ryan Ulrich, Im willing to give Chrissy a pass because she was an arrogant trainwreck in her own right. The grade school level voting confessional against Roark was unintentionally hilarious to a wonderful degree. And she continued to amaze at the merge, when she blatantly talked strategy to Ben at the feast, in earshot of the other castaways, under the understanding that they cant hear us.

It was Chrissys social awkwardness that helped liven up the middle of the merge, because she was just so sour and bitchy all the time, and I loved it. I loved her calling out Ben for being too bossy (which he got in her face and told her he wasnt), and I loved how, after she was blindsided, she robotically tried to strategize with Lauren, and got told off to her face. I also loved how she avoided constantly being targeted by winning immunity after immunity after immunity, despite being the woman who vomited during the very first challenge of the season.

What hurts Chrissy for me though, and this may just be unintentional, but I hated the presumed anti-woman attitude she brought to the season. It always annoys me when youve got those female players who hate other women and seem to play to be the last woman standing. With the exception of Simone (on another tribe) and Lauren (victim of Bens idol), Chrissy voted out EVERY other woman in the cast, and often time was the one leading the charge against them, even when it seemed completely illogical (see: Ashley). I know its stupid and irrational on my part, but Ive just watched too much Survivor and seen too many juries automatically reward a male player for doing the same things they would lambaste a female player for doingI just hate watching a strong female character shoot herself in the foot like Chrissy did. And I cant overlook that. Still wish she beat Ben though, by a LOT.

17. Simone Nguyen (Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, 17th Place)

People always talk about Simone being a dud on the same level as JP or Katrina or Roark or Desi, but I feel like those people are too hung up on her invisibility in episode one. Yes, its not a GREAT edit, but she was a HUGE character in episode two. Her whole story was about being socially awkward and taking an aqua dump (the death knellpoor Darnell), and it was pretty hilarious to watch this professional social justice warrior trying to fit in with a tribe based around the idea of being hard-working Hustlers. Overall, Simone just seemed like a sweetheart who I kinda wish had lasted longer as a thorn in her tribes side. An Eliza, if you will. But yeah, she was nowhere NEAR invisible enough to warrant cries of irrelevance.

16. April & Sarah (The Amazing Race 30, 10th Place)

Within one episode of beginning the race, these two already hated each other and were at each others throats, reminiscent of a similarly-amazing ??? & Sarah team from twenty seasons prior. I dont remember which one was which, but I remember the blonde sniping at the brunettes utter incompetence through leg one, right up until they beat out the cheerleaders in an awesome footrace to avoid elimination. From there, it was more spite and hatred, all leading up to them miraculously making it to the pitstop in ninth place (see? THAT is how you do a bottom-feeding story arc, Eric & Daniel). Unfortunately, this season introduced the stupidity of the head-to-head challenge, meaning that despite the brothers falling apart completely and putting themselves in last place, they managed to win a single task and stay in the race. I REALLY wish we got to see more of the Goat Yoga meltdownsthey were awesome.

15. Angie Rockstar Lantry (Big Brother 20, 10th Place)

I definitely GET why people hate Rockstar. She was cast to be the living embodiment of SJWs, and she served that purpose in the most cartoonish of fashions. However, she was just REALLY entertaining for as long as she lasted, in large part because she was such an overwhelming cocktail of emotional instability. If you enjoyed the blow-ups at Brett, that wasnt because of BRETT. Sure, he started shit, but then he just stood back and blandly repeated the same line. Rockstar was the one who erupted and gave us wonderful memes like DIS-GUHST-ING and ON YM DAUGHTERS BIRTHDAY?! And to make it even funnier, by her eventual eviction, Rockstar went out of the house believing Brett had her back forsome reason. She was a wonderful trainwreck.

More than that though, and this is the part that Level 6 fans seem to hate the mostbut Rockstar was pretty much RIGHT in her assessments of that alliance all season long. Guys like Brett have life handed to them on a silver platter? Uhyeah. They do. Brett had people falling over themselves to save them, and the fans thought he was just the most amazing character everexcept for the OTHER attractive young white guy in the cast, who voted Brett out as a threat. Angela has pretty privilege? Again, fucking YES. Angelas goodbye message was meant to be snarky, but it fucking proved Rockstars fucking point. If an emotionless bitch like Angela looked like Rockstar, she NEVER wouldve made it to the final four.

Which brings me to one final thought: Rockstar and Scottie were arguably the two most conventionally unattractive houseguests in BB20. They were the weirdo outcasts of the season. And wouldnt you know it, but they were the two biggest punching bags for not just the pretty, popular alliance, but their own allies as well. So yeah, Rockstars not wrong in her assessments, even though she was caustic in the delivery of her opinions. If she was a bit more charismatic, maybe the fans wouldnt have hated her so much, but as it stands, Im fine with her as is.

I cant believe I came out of this season having actually ENJOYED someone like Devon. On paper, he wasnt the most interesting or charismatic of players, but he just felt like a nice guy who was able to hide behind an aw shucks surferbro persona. But as the season went along, I found myself extremely impressed by him, to the point where I was rooting for his success, going into the final episode. This is a guy who started out on the Hustler Tribe (seriously, the tribe designations were SO fucking arbitrary this season), and he teamed up with obnoxious Ryanyet I still loved him. It helped that he showed strategic insight, which is something PAINFULLY lacking in characters of his archetype. He came up with Operation: Ben the Spy, was right in there with Lauren in flipping on the NuSokos, and he pulled off what SHOULD have been a season highlight, by throwing a vote at Mike at the final five. Sadly, Devon got fucked by the bullshit fire-making twist, cause I really wanted to see if he could beat Ryan and Chrissy in the finals.

13. Cole Medders (Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, 10th Place)

I dont typically root for the young, attractive guys on Survivor, if only because far too many of them are edited down to boring mannequins whose sole purpose is to be somewhat good at challenges and occasionally string together a coherent sentence. That being said, occasionally casting strikes gold and finds a character that manages to surpass his casting archetype in every way possible. With Cole, you have a guy who, on paper, is a Healer, a wilderness guide, and seems like just a generic, all-around sweetheart. Hes the type of guy whos cast more for looks than personality. Yet he wound up arguably becoming the star of the first half of HHH.

Basically, while Joe was off doing his Diet Tony Vlachos thing, he confided in Cole that hed found the hidden immunity idol. Thats great news for Cole! It put him in a similar position on the Healers Tribe to Devon on the Hustlers Tribe. And even better, Cole hooks up with Jessica as his official showmance. So youve got a power couple who are in good with the guy holding the idol. Great. And what does Cole do with this information? Well he tries to stage a coup against Joe, of course. This isnt a bad idea in theory, but Cole basically spills the secret information he has to the entire tribe, revealing himself to be kind of a strategic idiot. And thus begins the storyline of Cole cant keep his fucking mouth shut, and Jessica suffers because of this.

Through the rest of his time in the game, Cole is consistently portrayed as this dumbass who runs his mouth and spills information at any opportunity. Jessica finds a hidden advantage and shares it with Cole? Why, Coles gonna share that with Ben AND Lauren (the two outsiders) to gain their trust. And then Jessica is frustrated AGAIN. Meanwhile, Cole commits the cardinal sin of eating too much while simultaneously being too lazy around camp, which further pisses off the people who hes relying on when the merge rolls around. Jessica gets blindsided because thats just how life works for showmance pairs, and then we get Cole fighting Chrissy for a hidden immunity idol that isnt even there, while still catching all the blowback for having it.

Coles game was an absolute trainwreck, and I LOVED that the editors pulled zero punches in highlighting him as a trainwreck. In any other year, this storyline might rank him even higherbut unfortunately for Cole, there was another player that went even BIGGER. You all know who Im talking about, and well get there soon. But not TOO soon.

12. Stephanie Johnson (Survivor: Ghost Island, 16th Place)

Ultimately, I think in any other season, I would probably wind up ranking Stephanie about ten to twenty spots lower. Shes great and all, but shes not THAT great. She just stands out because of how utterly terrible and devoid of personality Ghost Island was overall. However, Stephanie gave us five episodes as one of the best characters of the season, so lets rejoice for her presence and the fact that she didnt wind up being the first boot trainwreck I expected based on her pre-season material.

Steph was the sole redeeming factor of the exceptionally bland pretty alliance on Malolo, mainly because she had a little bit of a mean streak and a personality to her. She was the one who schmoozed Jacob when hed been stuck on Ghost Island, and found out that he had no idol and thus no threat. And while her allies were worried that she might capitalize on her newfound friendship with Jacob, she coldly stabbed him in the back that same episode.

Sadly, the swap really fucked Malolo over, and Steph wound up in a 5-4 minority with an immovable alliance of Navitis, deadest on Pagonging the Malolos as much as they could. But while Brendan and Jenna existed, and Michael gamebotted all over the place, Steph played up her emotions. We got scenes of her drawing on the beach and praying that shed last another day. Alas, it was not to be. Steph getting sent to Ghost Island just cemented her as a big threat that needed to go (not Michael, whod already found an idol and played it to gun for Bradleynope, STEPH was the threat.) But yeah, her spunk and emotions brought some much-needed life to a desperate seasonjust not enough for a top ten berth.

11. Lucas & Brittany (The Amazing Race 30, 5th Place)

Almost had FOUR teams from TAR30 (4/5 of the final five) make my top ten. Im not sure if thats praise for a great season of Amazing Race, or scorn for how shitty the rest of the year was overall. Probably a little bit of both. The point is, despite just missing out on the top ten, Lucas & Brittany were wonderful. Brittany was an emotional ball of energy who tied herself to a rigid (and admittedly somewhat dickish, hence missing the top ten) partner in Lucas. They had cute little quirks, like Brittany saying pineapple whenever Lucas was being too much of a dick for his own good. And after bottomfeeding for the first half of the race, they came back and showed some strength, leading into Lucas proposal in Bali. It was really sweet.

I also loved their inadvertent rivalry with Cody & Jessica. It reminded me of the one-sided rivalry between Nick & Starr and Terence & Sarah. Theres always something funny about one-sided rivalries, because you have one team thats cheering whenever some misfortune befalls their enemyand then that enemy is just whatever. That, to me, is hilarious. And then, for all his rigidity, Lucas wound up getting undone by his own hubrisin forgetting to grab his passport when they were departing their plane for a connecting flight. Was it the best ending to their storyline? Not reallybut at the time, they were worse than three of the remaining teams, so better these two than one of my top three for the season.
