The root issue, is that it's impossible to live cheaply.

Rents and mortgages are expensive up because zoning and permits are completely goddamn fucked up, everywhere, and flophouses no longer really exist.

Medical costs are expensive because ERs are obligated to stabilize everyone and can no longer send people to "county", and we demand that our physicians waste a dozen years in school. The advent of the local clinic run by a LPN is the only real step we've taken in the right direction. On top of that, no "payer" (insurance or entitlement) actually pays the amount on the bill, which is why the bills went up - when you charge a dollar but only get paid thirty cents, charge $3.30 next time.

Cars are expensive because we demand crumplezones. ABS, and those tire sensors now, and we shredded the bulk of the used stock back at the end of the Dubya era.

Here lies the crux of the problem, lack of bootstraps. Dude has kids to support but selfishly puts his happiness first. Life isn't fair, get your ass a job.

This is why I refuse to ever have kids. I don't want a responsibility-weight hanging off of me.
