I opened the boxes thinking they were stuff I had ordered inside was a laptop, 4K TV, and the iPhone X. Looked at the label and it was for someone else. Do I have to return the items or am I allowed to keep them?

I believe opening a package designated for someone else is a felony.

From a purely legal standpoint Amazon could sue you and they will win. From a practical standpoint theyre unlikely to bother.

EDIT: never mind, after seeing what was in there. Yes, you should absolutely tell Amazon of the mistake. Given the value you will absolutely have legal trouble down the road.

What did you order that the size of the package containing a 4k tv didn't tip you off?

How do you accidentally open a fucking box with a 4K TV in it and not think "why is this bigass box even here"

Only if its intentional. A package sent to your address is unlikely to rise to that level unless there are some unusual factors that put the person on notice that this is obviously not for them. A simple address on the package probably wouldnt be sufficient.

People forget they order stuff all the time. Its not at all unusual for someone to get a package and think what the hell did I order, open it, then say oh, yeah, the coffee maker! [or whatever].

I'm taking advantage of the early sales going on and ordered a bunch of stuff. They are still out for delivery right now. If I am allowed to keep the stuff that isn't mine. I will probably go and return the stuff for store credit.

Obviously. Unless TC actually bought a big ass TV from amazon no way to "mistaken" the package as his own considering how big it would need to be.

To both of you this isn't a troll topic. I decided to just look it up myself as well as call Amazon and the answer is I am allowed to keep it.

https://www.ag.state.mn.us/Consumer/Publications/UnorderedMerchandise.asp

Under state and federal law, recipients of unordered merchandise may keep the goods and are under no obligation to pay for or return them. The recipient may treat the merchandise as an unconditional giftand may use or dispose of the merchandise as he or she sees fit. The recipient also may refuse to accept delivery. Federal law states that the sender cannot send you a bill or collection notice for unordered merchandise.

it would be kinda fun to keep the box and see if they're gonna contact you down the line(in a hypothetical situation obv since this is a troll topic).

say a couple of months or something and if nothing happens = score

if they do contact you then just say you have the box and the items are in "unopened" pristine condition since it's not your job to make sure the items end up in the right hands.

Looked at the label and it was for someone else.

If it was shipped to you in your name it is legally yours. If it's in someone else's name but your address I'm not sure what the legal requirements are of it.

If it's in someone else's name and someone else's address and dropped off at your house by accident, stealing it would almost certainly be mail fraud.

Ok, picture of all the items together, and maybe a crude drawing of a turtle to show it's legit.

i always preferred high ticket items to require a signature that the item was delivered.
there's so much risk ordering stuff.

even a porch isn't safe (unless you live out in the woods) that was the only time i felt safe having stuff delivered out there.
