sounds like you don't know what those players or the game are capable of, but you feel qualified to weigh in anyway.

So take away all the charm of the game?

if smash were a shitty fighting game, it would have no charm at all. you're into it for the same reasons they are, you just don't understand it as well as they do.

sore losers

people who refuse to compete are generally pathologically sore losers, in my experience. these are the people who cry 'cheap' or 'broken' any time something doesn't go their way. these are the people who disconnect when things look bad. these are your controller-throwers and tantrum-havers.

they simply cannot accept that there are better players than them, and when that fact hits them in the face, out comes derision, usually in the form of calling someone a tryhard - which is practically the same as saying 'well you're not really having fun'.

that's why I said "Imagine if it did"

SF wouldn't make that stage because those kinds of things are anti-competitive. which is why Smash people ban them for competitive play.

SF players can't even handle the Plane stage in SF5 so they banned it just because it has like a 0.2% of giving people nausea. Or the beach stage because it covers up the character's feet.

but the fact that it does explains why you resent competitive play so much: because it's proof you can't refute that these players exist in droves.

No, its a classic Strawman. Youre making something up that does not exist in order to devalue an argument.

Banning items from Smash is like banning projectiles from Street Fighter. Its for people not good enough to play the game the way it is designed. So they make up thier town rules.

If the game was not designed to be played with items off, there would not be modes in the game literally added by the devs themselves that do not have items.

i feel you. so, so many people feel qualified to say what is intended design and what isn't while ignoring how the game was actually designed. like their ideas are right, and the actual game isn't. i see this a lot in people who critique writing, too.

I never understood when people say that competitive Smash players don't know how to use items or their skill would plummet at the sight of an item dropping on the field. If a pro were playing against you (not against another pro) with items on, they'd destroy you even harder and faster. Mainly they'd be on you so hard that you'd never have the opportunity to get the item because you'll be combo'd all day, but if you did (and they didn't combo it out of your hands before you use it), they can handle it. They know projectile speeds, they have the reflexes to dodge a slow projectile or sword swing, items often make you move slower so they'll never be near you, and they know how much lag all their moves have so they won't be open. And if the pro gets the item, you might have given a character without projectiles a projectile, and since they know trajectories and speeds pretty well, they're going to use it very effectively, so have fun trying to get in on them.

And whenever I explain this, the response is ALWAYS "if they know how to use items so well then why are they banned?" The biggest culprit is explosive boxes/capsules. They can and will spawn randomly in the middle of an attack. You'd never know they spawned and all of a sudden you get blasted back and lose. That's 100% RNG that you cannot control or account for. But in a tournament, when talking about thousands of dollars on the line, any advantage such as an item spawning closer to your opponent is unfair. Sometimes they can dodge it and the item will be useless, sometimes it's literally impossible to avoid and you lose a life. When there is the ability to turn off RNG, of course they will do it. Do you think in pro baseball/football/golf if they could turn off the wind, they wouldn't because the players should just "get gud" and deal with it? No, they'd turn it off in a heartbeat, and it doesn't affect you in any way.

Smash is a series where it's easy to punish people who like lunging forward and diving in. If somebody camps near the edge and is strong against projectiles, they can just grab whatever attempt out of shield and toss em out the stage at low %

Except you can't. Some stages like Melee's Hyrule Temple have a circle where you can avoid the opponent easily. If they are underground and go up the right slope, just go down the left platforms, or vice versa until time is up. If you have a slower character, it's literally impossible to catch them.

Running away tactics also makes the best characters even better. Melee Fox will never get caught on Hyrule Temple because of his speed (and he can spam his gun to make sure he wins by percentage), and Brawl Meta Knight doesn't need speed because of his ridiculous air maneuverability, so any big stage he can find paths that no one else can follow.

This, all of it.

Marf w ray gun 2gud.

But seriously, I really dont get where the idea that competitive players would be so bad with items on. Just LOL. Theyre still better than you and youd get thrashed even worse with items on.

Speaking of playing casuals, I have plenty of casual friends that have some basic skill (shield grab, know guaranteed combos, an understanding of spacing) and they dont like items nor do they want to play on Corneria or temple. Theyll bitch that they get usmashed and die at 40% on the ships fin, they bitch its impossible to kill someone before 300% on temple, theyll bitch they just took 80% against a wall from dair > shine > repeat and it wouldve been even more bullshit if you didnt fuck up, ya know valid complaints.

But yeah, soccer games get canceled if the rain is too heavy (dangerous conditions with slide tackles) and no one playing American football likes playing in the snow lol. Theyd also prob want to turn off altitude when playing in Denver too lol.

Most people understand this is and think yeah.... playing in the snow sucks. Why wouldnt you want an indoor field with nice turf? Yet smash casuals completely gannot grasp the same concept.

The fact of the matter is that a competitive smasher will still decimate casuals with items high on any stage.

It just makes the game more volatile when suddenly they are facing similar skill levels.

it blows my fucking mind there is still this much misinformation and misconception surrounding competitive smash

items are not core to the experience of smash bros. they are entirely supplemental, and quite frankly even when i'm playing with complete casuals they have stages they will never ever want to play on. that's more a credit to just how fucking bad a lot of the stages in smash 4 are
