Analysis

Congratulations to Tails for reaching the third round for the first time in his long contest career. Theres no doubt this is where his contest ends. Sonic characters have looked great this contest, but Luigi is just another beast compared with Nathan Drake and Master Chief.

The main question for this match is whether or not there will be SFF. Sonic characters have had a history of collapsing against Nintendo and I dont see why this would be any different. The degree of SFF is usually not as high, but anything to make Luigi look as good as possible for his big match next round. Before SFF, Id expect Tails to get around the mid-30s against Luigi.

Analysis

Pre-contest this was one of the matches I was looking forward to. After four contests were finally going to see where Mega Man X ranks relative to the noble nine and other elite characters. There have been debates ranging from him being stronger than Mega Man to being a weaker elite character. The match is also shaping up to be interesting given that Tifa and Final Fantasy VII have looked pretty good so far.

Ive always felt that Mega Man X was pretty close to the original, at least pre-Smash 4 boost and that he has a great chance at being the strongest non-Noble Nine character, though with the way some characters are performing that might not be the case anymore. At worst, hell be at around Zeros strength which is decent, but with the way Tifa has performed that will likely not be enough to win this match.

The main reason I believe in Mega Man Xs strength was his performance against Ryu in 2013. Before the Draven rally Mega Man X was pushing 60% against Ryu, something that is only reserved for Noble Nine characters. Of course, we were still in the board vote when Dravens rally began so it is hard to tell where he would end up, but with his notorious terrible European vote it is likely Mega Man X would have ended somewhere in the mid to high 50s.

With that said, that is something Tifa could manage, especially now that she proved that she is still legit and is likely the strongest non-Noble Nine Square character. Mega Man Xs performance so far gives me no reason to doubt his strength though the match should be close regardless who wins.

Analysis

Personally, I wasnt too impressed with Amaterasus performance last round. Perhaps, Lara Croft benefit from the Pac-Man Apathy Factor. Regardless, Amaterasu was never going to threaten Sephiroth in this match, especially when he easily defeated Captain Falcon last round.

I think the worry that Sephiroth not having Noble Nine strength is gone. Of course, its doubtful that he is the number three on this site anymore and non-Noble Nine characters could still challenge him, but there was a non-insignificant portion of the board that thought he wouldnt make it out of this division.

Analysis

Congratulations to KOS-MOS for making the third round. Yes, this was by far the weakest four-pack of the contest, but you still need to get the job done. This is the long-awaited rematch between Ryu and KOS-MOS though both characters have gone in different directions since we last saw them battle in 2004.

Despite reaching the third round I still believe KOS-MOS is at best, high fodder. She may have had a cameo appearance in Xenoblade 2, but that was more of a fan service for Xenosaga fans. Considering how difficult it is to obtain her I doubt she gained many fans. Ryu on the other hand, has had Smash 4 and has so far looked as if hes boosted a bit. I think there is a great chance that Ryu will outdo his first and second round performances.

The 2 seeds in 2010 (roughly equivalent to a 1 seed this contest) looked terrible too. Squall was the only one that won their eightpack, though Dante was at least really close. Nathan Drake didn't even win his first match.

Right but the point is that Tifa has met both Seph and Samus before and doesn't get accurate results from them. Whereas if she had gone against a different person like say Snake or even Sonic again then we might get a better read

And the grand finals of Smash 4 this year at EVO had two Bayonetta players charging a move for 2 minutes instead of playing because they disliked that the crowd was booing them. And the person who won had the audacity to say they're the best in Smash 4 when half of the top players in the game didn't even go to EVO this year and they didn't play Smash 4 at all until Bayo released, which makes me question if they have any kind of fundamentals with any other character in the game (they likely don't since Bayonetta carries players, players who were completely unknown before her dumbass combos came to light in the community)

Eh, yeah, I guess he is. I had Luigi > Mewtwo, but I can definitely see how a non-Nintendo character would have a better shot at Luigi than Mewtwo would. Tifa's already beaten Luigi before. Technically so has X, but that was a fourway with freaking Mario, the absolute worst possible opponent for Luigi. Still, X and Luigi both faced Link directly in 2010 and X had the better percentage.

Let me say that, while all of this is true, some smash fans take the backlash way too far and by playing the character you are basically guaranteed to become a hate magnet even if you are not good at the game/Bayonetta. I really hope this winds down with Ultimate because it's ridiculous and sometimes honestly disgusting.

That is true. The Bayo players are basically universally disliked to some ridiculous extremes aside from Pink Fresh (who doesn't utilize the full potential of her kit and is very aggressive in his play style).

Normally I'd say give it a rest but I think the Smash fanbase's reaction to Bayonetta is fair based on what I've seen her kit do. She seems like a really careless add to the game, and it's not like my opinion on Smash's balance is exactly high.

Smash fans have acted pretty scummy towards Bayonetta players, but the character itself deserves the hate.

The Smash scene needs to grow the stones needed to make a stand and just ban completely stupid characters. They let Meta Knight stand and he was worse than Bayonetta could ever dream of being.

If you get to know her well there are more holes in her kit than you realize.

It is a lot of specific effort for 1 matchup though. Kind of like Sonic, but sonic doesn't immediately kill you for not knowing how to deal with him.

He was only banned for a short while in 1v1 before being unbanned.

I don't know what the situation is with doubles, because Brawl was garbage to both play and watch, but he's currently legal in the very few Brawl tournaments that still get played.

Cloud is braindead easy to play and gets picked by a million people because of it. He's not nearly as obnoxious or oppressive as Bayo, though, which is what people care about.

Smash 4's meta was really good before Bayo (and to a much lesser extent, Cloud) came onto the scene. There were a lot of viable picks for #1.

As far as I know, Meta Knight was banned in some case-by-case locals but there was never a widespread ban that was able to be enforced. I think they tried it for a bit and then reversed it, largely in part because a ton of people played Meta Knight and didn't want to stop (Mew2King said this outright at one point).

Meta Knight was banned but he was banned so late into Brawl's life many regions had gotten used to putting up with such a broken character those would refuse to enforce the Meta Knight ban, and thus eventually he became legal in every tournament because of how divided enforcing the ban was

The few Brawl tournaments ran today keep him legal, but a few ban him (and these actually tend to ban the Ice Climbers as well iirc)

The problem is also that Smash 4's patch cycle ended very soon after the addition of Bayonetta, so they basically let her be. I hope there will be more care in Ultimate if another huge outlier comes out as late DLC.

As for MK, I think him being in the base game and the general lower opinion on Brawl as a competitive game gave him more of a pass. Honestly, the way competitive Brawl was played and the tools MK had made him comparatively at least as obnoxious.
