Oh, right... no one plays Warhammer...

A basilisk is a relatively powerful artillery piece, but they're fragile

Uh, no, that's not Warhammer. Not even the dwarfs are running that kind of tech.

9 Basilisks would almost cost you almost 1000 points. So assuming you're playing a 2000 point game I'd say 9 is too much and you're kind of gimping yourself. I mean ether you're taking multiple spearhead detachments of which most tournament rules only allow 3 or your stuffing them into 1 spearhead detachment in which case you're only getting 1 cp point. Or you're using them in another detachment in which case you don't have many points to fill that detachment out.
All of this of course is a guess on my part because I don't know the specifics about how you're playing.
Point limit?
Detachment limit?
Tournament rules or casual play?

I play Death korps of Krieg myself and while I don't use Basilisks I do use 3 earthshaker cannons which are basically the same thing only they don't move and 3 seems to be enough for me.

Is this 40K or Fantasy?

Someone I know is trying to rope me into Fantasy, is it worth it? I liked Heroscape back in the day.

Basilisk can squadrom, so I don't need a Spearhead - they can just be plopped on to ma Loyal 32.

EDIT: I play Salamanders so these guys are purely artillery Line-of-sight support. Casual play since for tournaments I'd stick to just Loyal 32.

I've been thinking of starting Age of Sigmar (now that the rocky launch from two years ago has been sorted out), anyone here have any experience with it?
