As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community," the company told Game Informer in a statement. "PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and cant wait to share our plans with you.

When asked if Sony would push its event off-site, similar to how Electronic Arts provides a show adjacent to E3, PlayStation senior vice president of communications Jennifer Clark elaborated further saying, "We will not activate or hold a press conference around E3."

They might think Microsoft is more prepared to roll out a next gen console and don't want to get crushed by just dropping a name when MS has actual hardware on the floor.

Nintendo literally just to a Direct video and have a bunch of demos set up.

Theres no rule to suggest every major company has to do something at E3

E3 has becoem more about the publishers showing off their games as opposed to the console makers.

Wether Sony are there or not. A lot potential PS4 games will be so they'll have some presencce. Just not in the form of a media Briefing.

What's kind of interesting was that Microsoft wasn't even on the show floor last E3. They had all their stuff in a theater a block away. If they do that again and Sony drops then the West Hall is going to be dominated by Nintendo.

Sony conferences were my favorite of the "big" conferences but with few exceptions it's all about the other publishers or Square popping in to announce Nier Automata out of nowhere for me.
