Surprise anime update.

I started watching Kara no Kyoukai (Garden of Sinners. It's adjacent to the Fate universe though IIRC how "canon" it is to Fate is vague.) Only saw the first 2 movies (OVAs? Based on the intro gags I assume these were shown as movies but 1 hour runtimes just seem weird to call movies to me)

Pretty good so far. Second one (Murder Speculation Part 1) was definitely the better of the two. Shiki is a really interesting character. Touko is great too.

Kara no Kyoukai is pretty neat.

It's something a lot of people like to tout as "greatest anime of all time". I don't really feel that way about it, but most of the movies are very good.

I will say I strongly disagree with the way the story is presented in terms of the order of events. In particular I've found that the first movie is much much better on rewatch when you already know what's going on. (For the record I side with the "broadcast order" side of the Haruhi debate, so I'm not opposed to this type of story structure on principle. I just don't think it works at all in this case.)

Yeah, I've heard the high praise for it so it's been on my radar for a while, along with general Nasuverse awareness, saw that Crunchyroll had the movies so decided "why not?" I remember in the past that it was nigh-impossible/super expensive with the boxset being like $500 so it wasn't really an option before lol.

I'm not opposed to anachronistic orders but obviously I think I'm too early to say how I think it works or doesn't work here other than being a bit confused with 1 for a while.

Watched Kara no Kyoukai movies 3, 4, and 5.

Really great batch of movies here. The music has been strong the whole time, but it felt like it was utilized a lot better in these ones. Touko is so good. Shiki vs. Fujino was also a really good scene/sequence.

Movie 5 was also quite the... trip. Not that I plan to anytime soon, but I think that while I eventually understood most of what was happening, that another watch would be quite enlightening.

I still don't understand the appeal of those movies, I thought they had good music and the occasional good action scene but were otherwise boring nonsense at best. When they were bad, they were really bad. I know I'm in the minority on that though. At least they were a good warning not to watch anything else from ufotable.

I could listen to Touko get into philosophical discussions for an entire movie tbqh. I can see how it could be seen as boring/off-putting to someone who doesn't like/have a decent working knowledge of the Nasuverse and its mechanics though, but I find a lot of the discussions involving those pretty interesting.

It helps that I think Shiki and Touko have some really interesting aspects to them and they're explored often.

Also I think there's some pretty key differences between Kara no Kyoukai and the Fate series, if that's what you mean. Fate is a lot more action focused, is more direct in its storytelling, and is also more...idealistic, if that makes sense.

Also I said pretty much exactly the same thing in the anime topic already, but Yuki Kaijiura is fantastic. (I recently "rewatched" the Kara no Kyoukai movies and was talking about it there, though it was really only a rewatch for movies 1-6.)

No, I get you, I meant mechanics/lore-wise. 5 in particular was very heavy on this. You have the Root, Origins, the Counter Force, and Clock Tower all playing substantial roles. Additionally, though a lot of this is more aesthetically but Enjou is basically Shirou's separated-at-birth twin, and Araya feels like a proto-Kotomine in some ways. They definitely have sharp differences in motivation, but appearance-wise, some magic stuff, VA, scheming.

Touko, and the story in general, definitely feels less idealistic but it makes sense when Touko is kind of the main outlet for a lot of this. I mean in FSN, Rin is basically the magus with the most prominence and she's super idealistic for magus standards. Touko plays their reputation pretty straight.

And yeah, FSN and F/Z are more action focused but that's not a deal-breaker for me, like I said, I generally enjoy Nasuverse talkathons.

Kara no Kyoukai beated.

Movies (even though 8 and and 10 are only 30 minutes long and totally not movies lol):

5 >= 3 >= 9 > 7 > 2 = 4 > 6 > 10* > 1 >>> 8

*10 especially doesn't count since not only is it 30 minutes but it's 30 minutes divided into 3 different stories of roughly 10 minutes each.

Movie 1 probably would benefit greatly from a rewatch as pyre said from now having a much better handle of what was going on, but as is, I think that's where I'd put it. Movie 7 / Murder Speculation Part 2 was really good but wtf did we really need that disturbing Rio scene?. I almost think I might move it up to equal Movie 9 without that.

Now "Movie" 8... okay, okay, I brought this on myself when I said I generally liked Nasuverse talkathons lol. There are limits. While it was happening I wanted to make EoE/Evangelion 25-26 jokes but damn I think they still had the budget.

Really liked Movie 9, Seo secret MVP of this movie, her narration really carried this one IMO although I also really liked the idea/concepts behind Shiki's side of things. "Movie" 10 was weird because like I said it's just 3 super short stories. The cat one was whatever, but the Fujino story was actually really good IMO. Between Fujino's "unique" take on counseling, and the New Year's story showing Fujino, Seo, and Azaka are friends and hang out I'd totally watch a spinoff with that trio. Should have been more featured in Movie 6 tbqh! Although as Shiki and Touko pointed out, Fujino too OP now and could solve all problems pretty much instantly if she wanted.

Anyway, overall thoughts, I really liked Kara no Kyoukai. It's not "best anime ever" tier or anything, but I don't think I'd look strangely at anyone who held that opinion. I liked the characters and themes and as noted before the music is top-notch. Definitely was worth the time to watch.

My own ranking would probably be like 7 >= 5 >= 3 > 10 > 4 > 2 > 7 > 1 > 9 > 8? The top 3 are all pretty amazing. For a while I cried every time I listened to Kimi ga Hikari ni Kaete Iku. It's my favorite ending song from the movies, but there are a lot of good ones. http://puu.sh/CmEHW/33b39ea583.png were all the KnK songs I liked enough to DL.

One thing that's weird: books 1-4 are all similar lengths, and books 5-7 are all similar lengths too. Movie 6 was cut down pretty heavily (maybe the book's not that popular?).

KnK definitely a contender for my favorite anime. I've ranked it as #1 at various times. I consider 1-7 to basically be one series with 8-10 as bonus content, since that's how it was released, essentially.

Sprinter (Movie 5 Ending) is definitely my favorite ending song (and song in general) from KnK but yeah there were tons of good ones. Kimi ga Hikari ni Kaete Yuku would be #2 though, I think. Oblivious and Kizuato probably next.

I absolutely hated Kara no Kyoukai movie 8 yeah.

I might post more later, but my ranking is 5 > 7 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 6 >>>>> 8. Never saw 9 and 10 yet, though they are on my list.

I will say, I think 7 has by far the best individual scenes in the series. Everything involving Shiki/Kokutou is fantastic. However I just didn't think a lot of the thematic content of that movie really held up under scrutiny, which puts it under 5.

Yeah, that relationship and its dynamics are great throughout all the movies, but 7 had some real highlights. Really, 5, 3, 9, and 7 are all really, really good IMO. The order is almost just for show there. 8 was the only real dud IMO.

Ace Attorney Season 2 Episode 9 complete

The showdown between Phoenix and Tigre was pretty good. They played up the Tiger's intimidating personality a lot, which is great.

And it looks like we're getting a multi-part original case that isn't set in the past. Looking forward to that.

I now have Pokemon Ultra Sun. I haven't played a Pokemon game since Gen 3*, what am I getting myself into?

*Sapphire save data will tell you I got all the badges, and if I concentrate really hard, I think I became Champion too, but honestly I have essentially zero recollection of Sapphire so really my Pokemon memory really only covers up to Gen 2 lol.

Don't know about Ultra, but S/M were very handholdy which makes the first couple of hours pretty annoying. They're still fun, but probably my least favorite gen (also there's no national dex which is Ultra-dumb)
