Shows how much of their identity is tied up in the particular toys they like. Its not liking certain toys over other toys thats an issue, its getting this worked up because a professional asshole was able to cut that deeply into their soul by making some stupid inflammatory comments about their emotional investment in those toys. And if the reaction is to then behave like children and scream at him, theyve provided compelling reason for the articles existence.

I don't disagree with him, and want to choke people unconscious who use the term "adulting". Grow the fuck up, know who else has to "adult"? Everyone, you fucking child, your struggles are far from unique.

I do feel like he was right when he said something changed 20 years ago, but if he knew what the change was he would answer his own question. Publishers got smart and started writing more mature themes into the stories and wrote stories that could be enjoyed by kids and adults. 'Y, the Last Man has won awards and certainly is nothing I would let a child read.

He's an ass, but truth be told I can't stand people who's entire fucking personality and life is based around toys and/or comic books.

I also hate the whole "adulting" thing. Especially now that I'm in my thirties and I still see people my age saying it every time they do the most basic of chores.

But still, that has less to do with people liking comic books and everything to do with people being dumb and childish on their own.

my comic experience extends about as short as the assigned reading of Watchmen in college and having seen Iron Man 1/2 & the Nolans

but if youre a media personality and you choose to openly dismiss x other medium as stupid/for children then you should expect people to analyze that value of your own contributions in response
and Maher aint anywhere fucking close to sophisticated literature either so he really shouldnt use that as a barometer of an adults time well spent

And of course people are missing the point. This wasnt a missive on comics, it was an examination of what decadence does to society. You have thousands of people who cutely moniker responsibility with adulting and care more about how Marvel portrays Spiderman in movies than in their governmental representation. You could replace that with baseball or what have you, and the message would be the same. If you care more about some toy than, for instance, going out and voting, youre a selfish child. A spoiled brat.

this was a course specifically going over different genres
I recall also reading As I Lay Dying, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Trouble on Triton, and The Year of Magical Thinking for that one
along with some stuff I surely forgot

also to add on joels comment since I work in it, instructors were submitting Between the World and Me to use in class when the publication date was like a month before the semester start

I never read Watchmen for a class, but there are a lot of places that I could see it fitting into a class.

Persepolis and Maus are also pretty widely acknowledged as great graphic novels.

portraying a story visually on a page lends itself to a very different experience for the reader, and it's one that is worth studying.

even massively popular manga like One Piece could really be talked about in such a context.
