just another way for our brains to justify consciousness and existence

its really hard to comprehend dying so we believe in things like simulations or matrixes or heaven.

It answers nothing. All it does is push base reality back one tier.

I mean, it's likely true. It's not supposed to be an answer but it makes perfect sense to me. Whatever you believe instead of this is probably way more irrational and supernatural.

i agree with the assertion that the odds of us being in base reality are astronomically against us, if what we know about the progression of life, civilization and society in our own history can be extrapolated onto the much larger probability space and much longer timeline of the universe as a whole, and i also think that it wouldn't make any difference either way since we would most likely never be able to perceive our simulated reality as anything but the reality we and it are programmed to see it as.

you got to find the red pill!

I think a few Black Mirror eps would be more timely examples to use lol but sure, the first matrix was good. I don't think that's the same thing as Elon's theory though, "The Matrix" was a lot more shallower since it was all basically still rooted in a natural human world

I enjoy thinking about this theory. My only question is how much of the simulation history is...simulated? As in is there something important that happens during this portion of history that needs to be observed, or did someone start the sim and let it run?

Maybe people who use telekinesis just found a way to modify the physics engine.

I'm not sure what you mean by this question. I assumed you watched Elon's vids and stuff if you were making this topic. I don't see any likelier explanation for our existence than Elon's proposition that humans are the biological boot loader for AI. Everything humanity's been working for has been barreling straight toward it. Any sort of emotional plea for meaning or covering your eyes/ears about it doesn't really change it. If you think there's a better explanation you're welcome to believe it. Obviously no answer in this discussion can be 100% proven ever.

I've read Jean Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation and think he's onto it in that he describes modern society as built on models, symbols, and references that have become unmoored from nature and an 'objective' reality and describes that state as a 'simulation'

Though I don't think it's particularly useful to believe our universe and experiences have been conjured up in some purpose built machine (since there's no real way to disprove that, or do anything about it even if it was true)

Elon Musk is such a low-level hipster. I remember reading Bostrom's paper when it was released and trying to explain it to friends in layman's terms. No one got it then and I don't know if people get it today even with the mainstream exposure. "You mean like The Matrix?"

I think that it's a novel idea that people take way to seriously. It's gotten to the point of being a meme and some people just use it as shorthand for "I'm a deep thinker", but really, it's treated no differently than most religions and I really don't feel like we need any more of that right now.

if some super intelligence is able to generate a world we perceive as real in a computer do you really think there'd be any way for us to hack it? matrix only worked because the machine was apparently smart enough to turn all humans into batteries but too stupid to cull anything that escaped the matrix in the first place.

Because I don't take simulation theory too seriously? That seems like a huge extreme to jump too.

I never understood what's so bad about just accepting we're in base reality.

I think it's a fallacy that people think there always has to be something higher. They apply possibilities in places where there are no reason to assume such things, but there are gaps for basically anything they come up with to fit. Call it divine creation, a simulation, a fairy's fart in the wind, whatever. It doesn't change the fact that it a) is impossible to know because it would exist outside the confines of our reality; and b) would have no bearing on anything within the confines of our reality. Based on these caveats, it's logically identical to "not being real", so I say we start treating it as such.

The probability argument is dumb, because it would lead to the actual "reality" also concluding that they're in a simulation.
