If you took the battery out of a working system and plugged it in, it still would not turn on. Basically, it uses the battery even if it's plugged in. So if the battery is dead it may still show the charging light but not power on because there's no juice. I just took it apart, cleaned all the ribbon cable contacts with alcohol, and plugged them back in.
