if you understand why it costs $850 and still think it's worth it, go for it. make sure you can answer the questions (and the answer to the questions is to your satisfaction): what is the crystal made of, what type of movement is it, does it hack, does it hand wind, what is the accuracy of the movement, what is the case made from, etc

if you can't answer those questions, then i would say no, don't buy the watch.

Get it and continue to buy things of this sort. Eventually they'll be a bigger part of your life than the personality you pretend to have.

Yeah go for it. It's a major waste of money, but I bet you're loaded with cash since you're entertaining even the idea of buying a watch worth that much.

If you want it and you can justify it/afford it, sure. Wouldn't be my purchase but what does it matter what I think.

Wow, so why does it cost $850? It doesn't even look all that good either.

I think it's a slightly awkward price point for buying a watch, to be honest. You can get solid, really nice timepieces for ~$200 and you can get special ones for >$1500, but that $500+ mark is where things get iffy.

No idea but im guessing its the 300m rating. When I first saw it I thought it was the most horribly ugliest thing ever but over the years its really been growing on me and in the past 6 months its all i can think about.

If I could get the same thing with a lower depth rating for cheaper I would. Seiko has a few 200m ones with a shroud but the solar quartz one comes doesnt come in all metal grey and the other style that is all metal is an automatic which i dont want or like. Plus if i got those I dont think I would ever be happy with the purchase

If the watch i posted msrp'd for $150 or even $1500 same specs and everything, id still be wanting it.

Yeah I have one which cost me around that much and has all the "desirable" stuff that watch people usually like such as domed sapphire glass and showback case and all that stuff.

I just like this watch because of how it looks. If it could be bought for $50, it would still be the watch I desired.

Man if you want it that much screw everyone else, just make sure it's not going to be a painful expense.

Why not

the reasons watches are valuable and worth numbers nearing the 4 digits is because of the amount of detail required of the engineering in an automatic watch. to get a tool that can move 1 sec/sec without electronics and be precise requires a lot of work. it's literally gears powered by nothing but kinetic movement. that is where watches get most of their value from. that and the finishing, so the hardlex glass instead of sapphire crystal doesn't help.

highly doubt it. granted, all my divers do only have 200m rating. but my next watch purchase is this:

https://media.christopherward.com/media/catalog/product/cache/2/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/c/6/c60-43ada2-sokwo-bo_fr.jpeg

notice that it has 600m water resistance and is automatic....for only $830 MSRP. Not to mention that it has sapphire crystal, hacks, hand winds, etc

the watch you linked is a massive rip off. seiko is known for being afforable, maybe you're just shopping in the wrong places

here's an alternative: $372, but you may be able to find it for cheaper:

https://www.longislandwatch.com/Seiko_SRP777_SRP777K1_SRP777K_Dive_Watch_p/srp777.htm

the seiko turtle, almost looks the same but automatic and cheaper

remember that black friday is coming up too, so many sites may have deals upcoming

But a lot of lower end mechanicals can do that already and some are even coming with sapphire crystal. I know my $200 one came with it, its mechanical and as far as I know seems to keep time well.

I got more the vibe that it was more marketing and over romanticising mechanical watches to convince people to overpay to buy what technically is an obsolete product. Kind of like what Dabeers did with diamonds where they convinced people to spend big bucks on them when they arent even particularly precious or rare stones. Im sure those swiss companies would have been in panic mode when quartz was taking off. I mean you literally pay more for something that is less accurate and costs way more to service and maintain. Then again, who am I to say, i would probably be overpaying for what I actually get with this Seiko since they have way cheaper divers too but I really like how its looks and there dont really seem to be any other contenders.

it's more accuracy and better finishing that leads to increased prices. the ceramic bezel, the double anti reflective coating, more refined automatic movement (some watches can store up to 5 days of energy instead of the standard 40 hours), the number of clicks on the bezel, additional features like GMT hand or energy gauge, chronograph features etc. It just reaches a point of diminishing returns at some point depending on how much you're willing to spend.
