I have always loved smash but I've always been super casual about it. I will still probably prefer to play silly matches with items and stages and stuff, but I've been watching a lot of tournament videos and stuff because I have no other outlet for my Ultimate hype, and it has me kinda wanting to start learning how to "really" play as well. Then again I'm not sure I wanna pay for online and a gamecube controller and all that, either. Are there, like, tutorials for babby competitive players or something? Specific matches I should watch? Stuff I should read or learn about?

I dunno. Just play a lot and you'll get better.

same with anything

play a lot at first to learn super basics and work those in your play so they become natural but after a certain point, just playing on autopilot won't do you any good because you'll need to train yourself to recognize situations and the best options accordingly. it becomes a different game when you're playing against someone who has a similar mindset and predictions will come into play there.

but to start off you should look into a character and identify good moves and which situations you could/should use them in.

You need to learn how to play the neutral game, how to punish your opponent when you find an opening (not just the initial combo, but any extended juggle after that), how to recover from disadvantage (off-stage, above your opponent, or in a tech situation), how to best space your moves, and how to play mind games.

A lot of this comes with experience.

Also, know the game's mechanics. Knowing how airdodges work, DI, sDI, RCO Lag, ledgetrumping (and any other ledge specifics), and shield mechanics will help you in a lot of important ways.

If you want to practice with someone, let me know and I'll see when I can free my schedule up for a bit. I've won a lot of the smaller local tournaments in Texas's DFW region and I can somewhat hold my own against our power ranked players.

I'll probably need people to beat up on me before I go to the tournament in Michigan in April so I can see their strategies and try to adapt to them since I've never really tried playing the pro-style

Turn off all the party options, learn frame data and tier lists, and then make all your friends hate the game.

You have to get systematically destroyed by superior players over and over and over to get better.

Like seriously if you just faced Viviff or pjbasis over and over and over again you'd get better.

This is the most important part.

Also, just play Bayonetta. Using her seems to jump everyone up a grade

My problem is I'm going to stick with Kirby low tier and all because I feel I wouldn't be satisfied competing in a tournament win or lose if I didn't give it my all with him over any other character
