Not really, but people overuse the word a lot. They'll conflate simple lies with gaslighting.

Not that kind of reality

Basically its lying to someone enough, convincingly enough, that they start to believe you instead of believing what they knew to be true previously

Think abusive relationships. The abuser will gaslight the abusee into basically thinking it's their fault they're getting beat on and lied to.

The term "Gaslighting" comes from a movie called Gaslight (clever, huh?). A guy tries to drive his wife crazy (for a reason I've now forgotten). He tries to make her believe what did happen, didn't and what didn't happen, did.

In one scene he dims a gaslight. When his wife says "did it just get darker in here?" He goes on this long rant about how the lights are all the same, what's wrong with you, why am I always being accused, etc. in order to break down her belief in reality.

It's a psychological tactic to deceive.

One of my bosses used to do it to me all the time

Told me I was like a little brother to him, that hed help me move up in the company if I wanted to because he KNEW I could do it, that I was one of his best employees ever etc etc. there was one day he had me in his office calling employees in to talk to them individually and he gave the youre one of my best employees line to 4 people in a row.

all the while I was working 70+ hour weeks on salary, covering shifts he was supposed to do because my kid is sick, being told that because I was a manager I had to stay and cover for call outs even if I had plans/somewhere I had to be, but he could NEVER cover if I had to leave. At one point I had worked like 120 days in a row with no day off and hed come in and tell everyone else he worked just as many hours as me, and hed count coming into the building for 10 minutes as a whole day worked.

I could go on and on but Im annoyed now. If you cant tell that whole situation basically ruined any trust I had left in people >_>

Is that the one where she wore a green dress, but some time later she's looking for it and finds a red dress? He claims it was always red. She decides to prove him wrong and pulls the pictures from that time on the computer. The dress was red! He had photoshopped the green into red.

That's gaslighting but not from the movie. The movie was from the 40's and photoshop didn't exist.
