Sonic bites the dust against Zelda, bringing us Zelda's second win over the Noble Nine and our fourth total Noble Nine-loss.this contest. While Sonic is known for getting revenge on those outsiders who break the Noble Nine on him, right now it doesn't look like he'll get to do it too soon.

At this moment, the Noble Nine's win-loss percentage is doing almost 10% worse against outsiders than they ever have in a contest before. For comparison, 2013's record was 49-9 for 84.48%. 2007, 2008, and 2010 each had their records at 90+%. 2002-2006 was a perfect 100%.

To be fair, part of that percentage decline comes from a loss meaning more when the Noble Nine gets fewer matches against outsiders. Still, the Noble Nine has lost at least one match every contest since 2007 and if you don't count the rallies of 2007/2013 then we've only seen this many Noble Nine losses in 2008 -- a contest where they had ninety-six matches and the element of LFF.

I'll wait until later to update how Noble Niners do against each other since Samus/Mario is close, but this is Samus's first match this contest against a fellow Noble Niner and it's against Mario who beat her three times in the past.

Assuming MM hangs on I think from here on out we should see NN get wins on:
MM>Pika, Crono>Bowser, Samus>Tifa, Mario>Zelda, Samus>Zelda and finish at 17-4 for an 81% win rate.

This is without 8/9 getting the 4 wins in the main bracket like Seph got. If you added those 32 wins in, you would end up with the same 90+% records of 07/08/10 when all of the NN were in the main bracket. (it would still stay above 90 even if say Sonic dropped a 4th round match vs a strong upper midcarder like X or Luigi).

I would rather assume the other eight Noble Niners get at least three easy wins rather than four so we don't have to imagine eight new gimme-divisions for them, putting them right about at that 90% mark. Still, your point is made.

Crono beats Bowser again, and while Mega Man is doing better I am not ready to call it for him yet. My blue blombin' heart has been broken before!

So basically the NN only loses to characters whose source material is in close proximity to another member (Link/Zelda and Cloud/Tifa and Vincent) or a character who has one-time super fad powers like Draven and L Block

@FinalFantasyVII Don't forget about Pikachu though. No NN'er ever was from the Pokemon franchise. However if you think about the Smash franchise then it is fair game.

Solid Snake is mad and is trying to redeem himsekf after losing to Zelda by beating Sonic as hard as he can...which, right now, looks to be pretty much equal to Zelda's performance. Between this and seeing how similarly some of these other rematches have been going, expect an excellent rematch between Snake and Zelda if they cross paths again.

Not just Pikachu. Mewtwo and Squirtle both beat Noble Niners in 2013, and Missingno beat Crono in 2010 (though it also falls under "one-time fad powers", unlike the other members of its franchise.)

Why having matches coincide with each other effect the outcome? I just don't see why that would be.

The theory is if you have to vote in every match each day instead of just the matches you want to each day, the matches that would normally have less interest now have a new influx of votes that probably favor the more recognizable character.

It's not confirmed, but it makes some sense after seeing Pac-Man as well as Crash and Spyro.

Said this in another thread but there have been 19 zelda games since cloud was the main character in ff7, including last years worldy on the switch. Its amazing hes doing so well still really.

My random Noble Nine fact:

If it weren't for Cloud just barely losing to Mario in 2002, Link and Cloud would still be undefeated in 1v1 matches (besides against each other)

The streak is dead (and has been dead for a long time , it's just the asteriques that died this years) but it's still relevant.
The very fact they were the 1 seed in 2013 and in Legends this year mean the concept isn't dead.

I bet apples and oranges were the top two fruit for a long time. Even though here in 2018 we all know the top two are actually pineapples and kiwis, we still use the phrase "comparing apples and oranges" because we know what the phrase means.

I said there were asteriques years ago.
Technically the "pure" noble nine in 2007. 2010 if you want 1v1. 2018 if you want 24h 1v1.
But it doesn't matter.

Let's say Crono became a joke and lost round 1 against Reimu.
He would STILL be in the Noble Nine.
At this point, it's just a list, it doesn't imply that they are undefeated or even that strong.

What you don't get is that the Noble Nine is a historical concept. Back in the days of 2002-2006, these nine characters were undefeated except against each other (and genuinely the nine strongest characters of the era), and they made every single character battle in that span. Even if their streak has been dead since 2007, it doesn't change the fact of the Noble Nine being a thing. It just means they're no longer undefeated against outsiders, and now no longer the nine strongest (unrallied) characters in these contests.
