"What kind of projects do you deal with/details about data"

you can't disclose that, even to other co-workers. I had already asked that.

He later told me it was strange I didn't ask him about facilities or work life, but I told him that I was referenced by a friend. My friend already told me about that stuff so I never thought about asking about it because I already knew. He told me about their gym, their theater and everything.

Again, it was definitely a bad read. The dude went to almost the same school as me though and he seemed like he was just like me >_>

Dude, the interview process for them was so fucked.
During the lunch-in, they made fun of mormons because they refused to kill.
He called the guy a fucking idiot because he was a pacifist.

These guys are brain-dead nationalist drones. They would slit your throat and smash your skull in if an official asked them to with no questions asked.

Why would you "tell a joke" when you're being interviewed for a job...

The on-site visit had three portions. Interview then info session then a lunch with peers. I told the joke during the lunch with peers. It wasn't an interview, it was like a social hangout. I hung out with them for 2 hours and I told the joke near the end.

not as dark as the Christian horror stories. a lot of people got set on fire.

This. And if you count Bible stories, God killed literally millions in the old testament.

If God killed them himself, you can bank on the fact that they definitely deserved it.

Milkman. I have some serious advice.

It's great that you have parents willing to support you and provide the stability you need to be choosier with your employment. I won't fault you for that because there is nothing wrong with living with your parents (though maybe you should do a little more introspection before the next time you go off on liberals that are in similar "mooching" situations). But there does come a point where, an employer will look at your resume and realized you haven't had a real job in however many years and they will immediately throw your resume out because it's a red-flag. Even a software-engineering-adjacent job like QA that you know isn't your future is a better look than nothing. It also helps build up your professional network that can help you get better jobs. Having relevant job-employment is more important than pay, especially if you have a support network to fall back on.

Also kill the idea that you didn't want to work somewhere because you know you wouldn't be there long. Odds are you'll be there longer than you expect to be anyway and it's better than nothing. Also, and I say this as someone who genuinely like the company I work for, fuck the idea of long-term company loyalty. At the end of the day the company will cut you without any real emotion if it's better for them so, don't trick yourself into extending more loyalty than they are extending to you. That's not to say you shouldn't try hard because you know you are looking for something better or that you should carelessly burn bridges, but if you took that QA job and then 6 months latter you got a job somewhere better, leave. Leave professionally, but leave all the same.

I was in a situation not unlike your own. I didn't do wonderful with internships in college. I was an accounting major but I was turned down by all the major CPA firms. Thankfully, I had very supportive parents who let me live with them. I eventually got a job with as an accountant at a property management company. I knew it wasn't going to be for the long term, the pay was shit, the advancement opportunities were weak, and I was the youngest person in the office by 20 years. But experience was experience. 10 months latter, I got a job interview with a CPA firm that had previously turned me down. They liked that I had work experience and I got the job. I gave my employer notice, left in a clean, positive manner and 5 years later, I'm now an assurance manager and doing very well. But the only reason I am where I am now is because of that shitty accounting job I had.

Also, expand your search. You want eventually live in Kansas? Why wait. Start applying to jobs in Kansas. You won't start at $100k, but the cost of living is nothing compared to California (I live in Kansas and my three-bedroom, 2,000 square-foot town home is $1,300 a month and that's in Kansas's most affluent city) and if you are good at what you do, you'll be at that $120k sooner than you think.
