He was never as big and cool as Batman, Superman, etc. He controls water and marine animals -- kinda boring. After the New 52 happened, Aquaman was given near-Superman levels of strength as well as a pretty badass trident. Still not impressed. Super strength is the fee to even sit at the big boy hero table nowadays. Pop culture really tried to castrate Aquaman and present him irrelevant. Justice League showed me a version who was more of an *hole than Batman. Flashpoint showed me a King ready for war (as well as a Queen in wonder woman who was a bloodthirsty warrior). Comics showed me the king of the sea and visually that meant something (Im sure you've seen the scan im talking about.)
