the cards say they work for Wii and Nintendo 3DS, but don't say anything about the Switch. Going to get some gift cards for my cousins, but I know nothing of Nintendo consoles .

Same as xbox live or psn cards. You use it to put money in a virtual wallet that is only used for their shop. So that you do not need to put a credit card on your account.
