There's no rhyme or reason to where they're placed on the map, and the map is so huge relative to the comparatively small amount of collectibles.

It's nuts to me that for "100% completion" you don't even have to do all side missions, but you have to find 30 tiny dinosaur bones blended into the landscape across this massive world

Why does Rockstar insist on not including in-game collectibles maps, it just makes things tedious

horizon zero dawn did collectibles right. you had the option to buy maps if you wanted and were given a set area where the collectible was located.

it doesn't feel special, since they're in such random locations the only way you're every going to find even one is if you happen upon one by chance.

they could easily do something like they do with stranger missions where they give you a radius to search for them, like the aforementioned Horizon

Yeah, I've never bothered with collectibles in R* games for this reason. I'll pick them up if I ever come across them, but searching these huge worlds for such little gain or even guarantee you'll find anything is a massive (and boring) waste of time, IMO.

Really hard collection challenges have become the bane of video games in the last 2 or 3 years. See: BotW, and Super Mario Odyssey.

I found one dinosaur bone only a few minutes after meeting the stranger, since then I have never found any at all, lol

I found a few of the rock carvings

Cigarette cards I went most of the game finding very few, mostly because I always had my premium cigs full in inventory and never bothered getting rid of them. Once I found out that's the fastest way of getting cards I started emptying them out of my inventory so I could pick up more in the world..

Oh yeah I found one of those right at the tail end of Chapter 6, I never even met the stranger that gives that mission out (assuming there is one).

Like, even if there was some sort of talisman that gave a sound when you were near something

as it is I'm struggling to find a lot of these given a general area on an online map

Certain unique items you need to craft a few talismans/trinkets. You need them to max your stats. Also gives money, valuables, pelts, tonics,..
IIRC the dreamcatchers end up giving you an arrowhead that halfs stamina drain when using a bow.

The internet is already littered with both picture and video guides on everything RDR2 related. It's insane how fast almost everything is known about such a massive game these days.

It's interesting how the collectibles in Rockstar games haven't been streamlined at all. If anything they've just gotten more difficult since GTA3.

it would be much more fun if there was some way to find these without a guide. It is inordinately difficult to find all of them without one

Yeah, it started as just hidden packages, then it turned into tagging walls and finding clams underwater in San Andreas, then we had pigeons that I never finished in GTA4. After that there was the impossible ones in 5 (I used a guide for the spaceship parts because I wanted that buggy), and now we have the really hard ones in Red Dead 2.

I like it, honestly. Collectibles aren't even really collectibles in most games anymore. Too often you get waypoints telling you where they are and you run straight to it, turning it into just another side mission. Rockstar does it the old school, turning them into a 100% optional side mission that most people won't ever finish. Hell, the first of the only two dreamcatchers I saw I thought was just set dressing until I approached it hoping there'd be a hatchet or something beneath it.

This isnt really old school, though, is it? Old school was floating, easily identifiable objects in a relatively contained location.

This is ultra-new school, realism to the extreme, where this, for example, is a collectible you need to find in a map that is dozens of square miles:

The collectibles are awful in RDR2. Hunting all of the animals is the only side activity that feels rewarding. I'm going to completely forego the collectibles.

I've found two dreamcatchers in my roughly 200 hours of playtime, both by accident, and I don't actually recall anyone in the game asking me to find dreamcatchers.

I've found two dinosaur bones as well. I actually stumbled upon the dinosaur lady's house and could hear her talking inside. Took me a minute to remember what that was all about. I hadn't spoken to her since early on
