Like...I didn't realize it, but I guess it's been well over 10 years since I've played it. Started playing it again and my god, I forgot how awful the dialogue is in this game. People think this still holds up?

I can't believe people actually thought Kojima was a good writer.

Nah, only gameplay holds up.

Story is dogshit, the dialogue is dogshit, even the direction is wonky as hell.

I'd brush it off as simply "lol japanese" but this guy apparently has made it his life goal to emulate Hollywood so I don't think that is it.

I replayed it about a month ago and I was cringing at a lot of the dialogue. Especially between Otacon and Snake on the tanker.

I mean, I get why it is the way it is. They needed to convey information to the player and that was the best way to do it and it wasn't like there was a blueprint or anything on how to do this without looking weird as fuck. So I give it a bit of a pass.

And I mean, at its core it has that charm of "it's a video game" that has seemingly been lost as everyone tries to make games exactly like films now.

"Oh yeah, also you've been part of a anti-metal gear group for two years now. Don't forget that."

You can tell he learned from this in MGS3 when it has a flashback to the briefing so it doesn't seem so fucking jarring.

It also kind of reinforces the point that playing as Snake through the whole game wouldn't "make sense" because he's a veteran and you need to give players tutorials or whatever he said after the release in regards to Raiden.

yea, the themes were pretty interesting, but the writing was pretty bad.

the worst part isn't the dialogue, but the narrative, and how the story can be moving along, and then a power point presentation pops up

I still love the series, though.

Oh look, the guy with the underage anime girls in his sig is telling me nobody cares about my opinion. How quaint.

Also the idea that pointing out that a Japanese game feels like a Japanese game means my opinion doesn't matter seems really fucking stupid, but whatever.

If someone tells me with a straight face that MGS2 has good writing, and they're out of high school, I just snicker cause it always usually means that all they watch is cartoons and anime and don't read at all.

Like, Kojima took on some heavy themes for the time. The writing isn't "good" though.
