Remember it being really fun in Melee where you could do a shit load of different things and end up with a new challenger battle.

Fighting or playing a mode a certain amount = boring

Also bring back those event fights

Maybe something else should be locked behind creative objectives. Like spirits

This, basically. I'd gladly pay $5 for an "unlock all" pass.

My fiance and I are having a party Saturday and I really want to have every character unlocked by then. I'm gonna have to do the game-reset trick for an hour or two on Friday to take care of it.

Nah unlocking stuff isn't the problem. It's just that the unlocking methods aren't fun or creative the way they used to be. Instead of stuff like "Ganondorf - Clear Classic mode on Hard difficulty with Link.", or "Falco - Beat 100 man melee." it's all basically like "Palutena - Play 67 versus matches."
Like I wouldn't mind doing a bunch of stuff like they had in Melee and Brawl, spanned across 5 or 6 hours, but just grinding out matches is fucking monotonous.

Or just, you know, set stock to 1 and jump off a cliff repeatedly, until everyone unlocks.

You could grind out 67 vs. matches, over the course of several hours (or days), or just jump off a cliff 67 times within about ten minutes.

I have no problem grinding out matches cuz that's what I'm gonna do regardless. But a little bit of the magic is gone now that the unlocks are basically tied to classic runs, the story mode, or just matches. Like getting young Link because you beat the target thing with Link was such a surprise to me.

Play a versus match (quick one stock at lowest difficulty)

Defeat new character challenger

Close software

Open software

Repeat

I imagine this won't take more than three minutes per character, if that. Unlocking 66 characters means 198 minutes, means a little over three hours for everyone.

I'm staring down a time crunch simply because I'm going to set the game up at work on Friday afternoon during the office holiday party. I'm also kind of expected to actually work that morning, so my plan is to wake up around 4AM and unlock maybe twenty characters or so before I have to start work. 28 with more on the way during the party. Given that I'm by far the most dedicated Smash player in the group of people playing, I don't think people will be dissatisfied.

Except maybe the people who have to play with a single joycon because I have a Pro and 4 GCN controllers and that's it for the quality stuff. >_>

Going by what eventhubs is saying, there are three methods for unlocking characters.

1) Grinding out versus matches, one unlock every ten minutes (unless you close the software and open it back up, then the timer goes to zero).
2) Playing Classic Mode. Apparently who you play as determines who you unlock at the end.
3) Playing World of Light. As you go through it, you'll run into characters and unlock them both in WoL and in the main roster.

You can't do that though. There's a 10-minute cooldown for unlocks to prevent you from doing that, so you have to wait 10 minutes before the next match to get one. You can get around that by turning your switch off and on again which saves some time BUT even then that only works for about 20-30 characters. After that, some characters require you to travel a certain distance in the game on top of the 10 minute cooldown, before you can unlock them.

So no, you can't do it in 10 minutes. Some sources are saying you can do it in about an hour and a half to two hours, but that's unconfirmed.

Dude calm the fuck down. The only reason im such a rush is because I'm having a party the day after Smash releases and i want to make sure I have the entire roster unlocked before then.

If it weren't for that, i would lol at a $5 unlock and just get everyone over the course of a week or two in World of Light. But as is, i can't do that unless i want to blow through the entire story mode in one night.
After the Wii U version launched with almost all characters unlocked from the start, i wasn't expecting this amount of work involved to have access to the full roster.

Something along the lines of "konami code" would serve the same purpose.

The middle ground would be a bunch of interesting unlock conditions to unlock characters, and then an "unlock everything" code you can enter at the title screen (maybe just for multiplayer, unlocking characters in Classic/etc would be done the normal way to give a sense of progression to it).

Still, 20-30 characters in that method is fine. I'm sure we won't get the full roster on Friday anyway, and once I bring it home, I'm going to deep dive into WoL and get everyone else that way.

Come to think of it, if "total distance traveled" means total player character movement during fights, then doing 8P smashes (as I intend during the party) should get that number up in a jiffy.

People aren't really sure how it works yet since a lot of people doing the reset trick are saying after like 20 characters or so, they did getting new characters after every match.

Some guy said when that happened he played a match where he just ran around a lot for a while, then jumped off the stage to end the match, and he got someone from that. He already tested leaving the game on for a long time, so time wasn't the issue.
Instead he supposes that there's additional variables for some characters like "walk/fly a certain distance in VS" before they appear for unlocking.

So yeah, its gonna be tricky. It seems like the fastest way will be a combination of the VS grind and reset trick, while switching to Classic for a bunch as well.

You're right, they probably are.

But why go to that when every game thus far has had really creative, varied ways to unlock stuff? Like, I'm not necessarily complaining I have to unlock stuff. I'm complaining that the unlocking is gonna be a boring slog.
