MAGA!

Since the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trumps aides and advisers have tried to convince him of the importance of tackling the national debt.

Sources close to the president say he has repeatedly shrugged it off, implying that he doesnt have to worry about the money owed to Americas creditorscurrently about $21 trillionbecause he wont be around to shoulder the blame when it becomes even more untenable.

The friction came to a head in early 2017 when senior officials offered Trump charts and graphics laying out the numbers and showing a hockey stick spike in the national debt in the not-too-distant future. In response, Trump noted that the data suggested the debt would reach a critical mass only after his possible second term in office.

Yeah, but I wont be here, the president bluntly said, according to a source who was in the room when Trump made this comment during discussions on the debt.

The episode illustrates the extent of the presidents ambivalence towards tackling an issue that has previously animated the Republican Party from the days of Ronald Reagan to the presidency of Barack Obama.

That's basically the Republican strategy. While they're in power, they implement policies that are basically time bombs that will cause major problems a few years down the line, which they conveniently blame on Democrats. And people fall for it every fucking time.

Right, but it's rare we have someone just come out and admit it. One positive of having a president who is an utter moron is transparency, even if not intentional.

I mean of the last two Dem presidents one cut the deficit by a pretty large amount, and the other balanced the budget.

You'd have a harder time finding deficit hawks in the Democratic Party though, I'll agree. But still it's hard to argue with results *shrug*

The tl;dr of the US government, for a rather long time:
"My side is doing awful things for reasons I like. Your side does awful things for reasons I don't like."

We really need a Balanced Budget Amendment, badly, and not one that can be ignored by perpetually declaring an "emergency".

That'd be a stupid-ass thing, because there's many instances where spending lots is required.

That's the motto of the American Conservative so it doesn't surprise me.

They don't give a shit about the environment, the economy, young people and their education, etc... because they'll be too busy retiring and playing golf.

Austerity doesn't actually work, all it does is fuck over the poor for no actual benefit.

Too bad the proposed alternative is "kick the can"
In the case of fiscal consolidation, the short-run costs in terms of lower output and welfare and higher unemployment have been underplayed, and the desirability for countries with ample fiscal space of simply living with high debt and allowing debt ratios to decline organically through growth is underappreciated.
