Because in order to make it a fighting game you strip it down to its most boring form.

Thats not Smash.

It's such a dumb fucking thing though. Mario Kart is a goofy, casual racing game, why can't SSB be a goofy, casual fighting game?

why can't they just ignore them and enjoy smash as a special genre?

Imagine getting a group of casual friends together and saying "Hey we're gonna play a party game," and they expect something like Mario Party or Jackbox but you pull out Smash Bros.
People don't just pick up Smash in the way they do MP or JB. It's got a learning curve and a skilled player will always outpace someone who's never played it. Mario Party is designed so that even if it's your first time, you can potentially win.

Now imagine telling a group of casual friends you're gonna play a fighting game and you pull out Smash Bros. They get exactly what they expected.

The fuck world do you live in.

This is LITERALLY what Smash is. Full stop.

Its a game where no matter what, a group of gamers are going to hop in, find characters they absolutely love and just jump around and have a blast in.

It does have a higher learning curve, but that doesnt make it any less appealing to a mass audience.

Imagine having friends who are casual games and are utterly BAFFLED by a silly fighting game with a collection of the most recognized characters in gaming history.

That's the problem, your parties are with gamers, while most parties that would break out Mario Party and Jack Box are usually not with gamers. Someone who has to look down everytime to find and push the B button will not see a game of Smash and think "I want to play that, that looks easy", while they would if it were Mario Party or Jack Box. Try explaining recovery to someone who has never picked up a controller before, it's impossible.

At your upcoming Christmas party with the family, go ahead and take out Smash Ultimate and see how many of your aunts and uncles jump in and play with you because they recognize Mario.

People get too hung up on whether it's a fighting game or not. I don't consider it to be one just because of how different it is from the majority of fighting games, but if it has to have a label, that is the easiest one to give it. It not being a real fighting game doesn't make it any less competitive.

Sorry. I should have said "a group of friends' to avoid confusing anyone who don't understand the obvious point being made.

I like how your argument is "Try explaining some irrelevant detail of the game that wouldn't matter to a casual player" as if to make the game seem daunting. As if that's humanly possible with Mario and Kirby on the box.

You think when Smash first released on the N64 and kids everywhere immediately understood the "higher level" concepts and were rushing into tournaments to compete? No the shit wasn't complicated then and we all jumped on the train because we just wanted to beat up Star Fox and Pikachu.

There's nothing more to that formula now that any casual gamer needs to understand.Pick a gaming icon and beat up another gaming icon. Super high concept stuff guys.

The fact there's people who are so far up Smash's ass that they can't take it for the simple party game it is is disturbing really.

All this is said btw having played a number of hours with casual Smash with very casual gamer friends and having a blast with it.

This is honestly one of the weirder arguments I've had on this sub. It's like trying to get someone to understand french fries are made of potatoes.

If you can't see how the barrier for entry between a game like JB which requires zero fundamental knowledge of video games, to Mario Kart/Smash Brothers then you shouldn't be having this discussion.

There were characters in that game that were so fucking bad that you couldn't win a single match with them ever, no matter how skilled you were.

Servebot, notably.

Other characters with 0 to death combos, characters who had full screen projectiles.

The game was completely fucked. Probably less balanced than Mugen and yet it had a huge competitive scene.

People just only played like 2% of the roster

Nope, I never said anything about Mario Kart.

And YOUR talking about casual gamers, I and likely more in this topic are talking about people with next to zero gaming experience. Usually in the context of discussing party games such as Mario Party and Jack Box, that means people with next to zero experience. I'm talking about people who will not remember where the jump button is located when knocked off the edge.

I also agree with you on everything you said about smash being a good game for casual gamers. Casual gamers love Smash. So that big post you initially responded to was pointless.

Smash Bros is designed to allow you to adjust it to be closer to a fighting game or closer to a party game as you wish.

Fighting Game: 1v1, Stock, No Items, Final Destination
Party Game: XvX, Time, Items, Battlefield

If you consider it to be purely a fighting game or purely a party game, you're going to wind up with stupid arguments.

Once, back in 2006. The tournament didnt really start to explode in popularity until 2008, when SF4 came out.

I dont feel that a one time occurrence from 12+ years ago out of the hundreds of video game tournaments within Evo that have been fighters should discredit them as a fighting game tournament.
