Rent-a-band Ghost doesnt deserve any award. Manufactured trash music with no depth or soul.

So having listened to their discography for the last almost 3 hours, these guys are basically The Rolling Stones with Metal-tinged riffs, lyrics, and themes thrown in there. Black Sabbath but arena rock. Satanic Queen. Bon Jovi covering Candlemass.

Theyre fun I guess. I feel like if American Dad did an episode (like the My Morning Jacket one) where Stan gets obsessed with (unknown to him, but obvious to everyone else) Satanic music, this band would make a cameo. Cool music that I wouldnt mind playing in the background if Im out somewhere but Im not going out of my way to put this on when I wanna listen to music after a long day.

Basically

They also have really good marketing, with a cool live gimmick that has transitioned to a different but also pretty cool live gimmick

I very much doubt any of their fans have heard of candlemass, and as seen in this thread they are oblivious to bands that arent played alongside Disturbed on modern rock radio stations (as though that is some kind of achievement)

Sidenote High on Fire somehow got a Grammy nod, now theres a band deserving of accolades if there ever was one. Electric Messiah is an amazing song

I mean I enjoy them. I dont have to belittle people and brag about metal bands which is the lamest thing to do ever.

I listen to Slough Feg, Sigh, t.o.o.h, strapping young lad, Arcturus, gorguts. Who cares

@TheGoldenEel 1. Yeah Electric Messiah was a great album from this year. HoFs best in years in my opinion.

2. Their live show is something Ive heard praised to no end, like you said theyre not just musicians theyre a whole package, entertainment in many facets and thats gotta contribute to their success. I just thought they were only successful through their sound, this like Earth-shattering new wave in Metal like Meshuggah or Converge or something that brings the cult following Im seeing.

@darkprince45 I didnt mean to sound like a Metal snob with the namedropping of all these bands, Im sorry for coming off as a little insensitive and condescending. Ill pick my words wisely in the future. Again Im sorry for talking down on you and others.

Nothing screams selling out more than dressing up like a Satanic cardinal with a pedo stache to sing a six minute sea shanty inspired track about the grim reaper

@Flockaveli, yeah, their live show definitely adds an element. The theater and the lore around all the characters is campy fun, often hilarious and occasionally genuinely menacing, like an old horror movie in band form. Its a bit Spooky Ziggy Stardust.

Also, Im 99% sure TC was referring to GoldenEel as condescending, not you! At least I am

Absolutely, but drawing attention is not the same thing as selling out.

Thats like saying David Bowie sold out by dressing up as Aladdin Sane. The theater is a quintessential part of his act. Its still a niche that will always alienate plenty with the Satanic imagery.

Its not just costumes, its an ongoing story. Some dont care about that at all, but some (myself included) love geeking out about it.

yeah. i wouldn't say ghost sold out. the gimmick was always there, anyway. plus if there's a story behind it, they're definitely doing it because they enjoy it. shit i wouldn't mind playing music in horror costumes myself.

Tbh I was trolling win my first post, but I do take issue with people making hyperbolic claims about bands like Ghost (like claims in this topic that albums dont matter these days). Theyre one of the bands Rolling Stone says is saving rock music or some such bullshit, as though it ever needed saving

I think theyre fine, I saw them live twice back when they were anonymous and they were fun but musically nothing particularly exciting. Their current live show looks cool albeit directly ripped from King Diamond

I guess my point is I dont mean to condescend, I just wish more people would experience the wealth of great hard rock and metal that is being made right now instead of thinking it ends at what is on modern rock radio playlists

Mhm. I'd feel differently if he just threw on skull paint and called it a day.

The amount of work and fun that goes into the lore and backstory of his own little world is really neat. We got months of teasing about the fate of Papa Emeritus III and who the next leader would be, the origins of the clergy, etc. Plus, it's all handled with a knowing wink about how dorky the whole thing is, like Papa Nihil's saxophone.

I mean, you don't have to like Ghost, but how anyone would see this and think "yeah, this is soulless, obviously this is mass-produced garbage to feed the masses," beats me. They're clearly having a fucking blast being what they wanna be.

I'm not getting your point. Is he supposed to actively avoid gaining fans or something? He's clearly still creating what he wants to create. "Selling out" to me is when you stop trying and just coast on whatever the suits tell you to make.

The point is, shocking and/or satanic imagery is something that's been used to great success in the past. So you can't really hold that up as proof that they're not all about the money.

You only addressed half my post, then.

Their latest record contains two instrumentals (one Yes-inspired prog bit ending in some Nordic folk, one 80s action movie banger with Springsteen-esque saxophone solo) and a six minute sea shanty about the grim reaper. I just feel like everyone is always in a tremendous hurry to claim everyone is selling out based on... nothing tangible.

Prequelle reminds me of when Peter Gabriel put out "So." Everyone lost their goddamn minds about him selling out because he dared to write a couple catchy songs, despite half the album being his usual weird trippy shit.

Regarding the list of nominees, as much as I love Weezer, I don't know how they managed to get a nom for Pacific Daydream. I felt like it was pretty weak, especially compared to their previous two albums. Also, I'm disappointed that Coheed and Cambria's new album didn't get any love.

Maybe the fact that they sound more radio friendly with every album.

I mean... he is.

With collaborators of course, who are credited on the album, but he writes all the songs. He recorded the first album essentially by himself with a friend who never joined the band helping to lay down the tracks. He plays every instrument on the albums usually except drums, I believe, and sometimes keys.
