I feel like you are approaching that segment in extreme bad faith but I suppose I would suspect older people are in average far less exposed to American-centric and internet culture from which awareness of the context would flow from or allow for research on.

That said obviously an older person actively using that term kinda outweighs that presumption in the suspicion stakes

I will admit I would like pewdiepienl to not be racist, just stupid.
But I am open to the idea that he might be racist.
I just want to understand the european perspective becuase I am not european.

I just thought it interesting that you made a distinction between millennials and older people.

people who grew up with the internet are more connected to each other and more aware of different perspectives from around the world

Honestly? No.
But then again neither do Africans that have migrated here in my experience. Our n-word is "n****" (Dutch) and not a single time have I seen a black person get offended when someone uses that word. I don't know why, guess either they understand that the word doesn't have the same negative connotations as it does in English or they're just like "not going to bother with white boy here".
Usually when someone racially insults black people here they say shit like "black ape" or "sootmop" and I have seen blacks get really pissed about those.

Edited the translation, hadn't seen the mod's post.

Most of it was about pre modern times then the world wars.

If you're British, French, Belgian, German, or Portuguese, the history of the Atlantic slave trade and/or of European colonialism in Africa are part of your own country's history, and you're very likely to be fully aware of the meaning behind the term.

When I grew up in Sweden, the N-word simply meant a darkskinned person who originates or have ancestors that originates from Africa.
And with N-word, I mean the lighter version, the one that Martin Luther King, Jr. used in his "I Have a Dream" speech of 1963. The worse version was never used until gangster rap became popular.
And yes, we knew about slavery and the Civil Right Movements, but the way we saw it was that you had poisoned your version of the word. Since we never used the word in a negative way, we had no problems with using it. Black immigrants had no problems with the word, so why would we?
If we wanted to use an offensive term, then we simply used blatte, which can be compared to kanake.

We did [in Secondary school] Rome, WW1, Native American Indians, Napoleon's Russian Campaign, Weimar Germany and the rise of Nazi Germany, Vietnam [French Indochina to Reunification], Unification of Italy, Soviet Union's formation and rule under Stalin and Ireland and trying to unify around 1900. I very vaguely remember us doing something about the Tudor's, the successions of Edward, Mary and Elizabeth and revolts that took place during those times.

Most of it was about pre modern times then the world wars.

Nothing about Sweeden that I remember, but a little about Britain. We had two WH courses, one for ancient times and another starting at the Industrial Revolution. Between the two of them, broad subjects I remember (it's been a while) included prehistory, Mesopotamia, Greece, Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia, China, Rome, the Middle Ages, Industrial Revolutions, French Revolutions, Age of Imperialism with Africa and India and the World Wars.

Now Modern European History covered a lot of that same stuff plus a good bit about the Hundred Years' War, War of the Roses, German unification, Italian unification, Prussia, like 40 Russian revolutions, a bunch of stuff about Austria and Switzerland that I don't remember at all, and a whole bunch of English and French kings.

And History of the Americas was mostly Latin America. Guys like Cortez, Pancho Villa, Zapata, Eva Peron, and a bunch more I can't remember.

How dare they mess up the character of Hitler

the n word is heavily used online and the majority of gamers online are desensitized to it. it's reasonable to say that even an American using the word doesn't mean that individual is racist. racism needs to stem from intent, and intent can be chalked up to some ignorant fuck copy catting others into saying a word they arent even thinking of the entire historical context behind. that said, i still think people generally shouldnt say it

The 3/5 compromise was a fuck you to the southern states who constantly hounded on the federal government to inflate their population numbers to leverage greater representation in Congress when their slave population weren't actual citizens and couldn't even vote anyway. They were not considered 3/5 of a person, it was a purely political compromise that was 100% about political representation, not the humanity level of a black person.

And yet you didn't counter that idea at all.

I ask what the difference of treatment between 3/5 a person and property is.

Instead you go on an aside hoping I don't realize you trying to save face by distraction.

If you truly got me, explain the difference.

Afterall, you claimed I did not know history to say they were treated as 3/5 of a person. There must be a HUGE difference in treatment right?

In what way is being 3/5 of a person treated like a person?

What can someone 3/5 a person do differently?

You think you have a point, but you don't.

You just have a NEED to get someone. The idea that I somehow implied slaves weren't treated as property just isn't there.

I agree that pewdiepie probably isn't racist. He probably was just being edgy (which is dumb) and he's apologized for it and I believe he's being genuine.

saying "[person X] isn't racist" is a gross oversimplification. society is racist. he was raised in society, and therefore retains some of society's racist conditioning, whether or not he realizes it.

And with N-word, I mean the lighter version, the one that Martin Luther King, Jr. used in his "I Have a Dream" speech of 1963. The worse version was never used until gangster rap became popular.

I didn't know they had gangster rap in the southern US in the 1800s! I guess you learn something new every day!!!!

I didn't know you could read an entire post and not even remember the very important first sentence. I guess we all learned something today.
