https://qz.com/1486377/global-shipper-maersk-says-it-will-eliminate-fossil-fuels-by-2050/

The worlds largest maritime shipping company is slowly ditching fossil fuels, and in doing so has thrown down a challenge for the rest of the industry to follow suit.

Denmark-based AP Moller Maersk this week said it will cut its carbon emissions completely by 2050. Thats a significant goal for the company, which is part of an industry responsible for about 3% of the worlds emissions, according to the United Nations. If shipping itself were a country, data show it would be the worlds sixth-biggest greenhouse gas emitter. Maersk accounts for about 20% of the worlds sea-based freighting.

The biggest part of the process will be to switch to carbon-neutral ships by 2030, a move that depends on the industrys ability to find cleaner ways to power their massive container ships. The only possible way to achieve the so-much-needed decarbonization in our industry is by fully transforming to new carbon neutral fuels and supply chains, says Sren Toft, a top executive at Maersk.

The company has already aggressively sliced into its carbon footprint. Since 2007, Maersk has reduced overall carbon emissions by 46%, according to the company and media reports. Thats been made possible by about $1 billion in investment into cleaner technology, including the hiring of more than 50 engineers to find those solutions.

The lofty goal set by Maersk is in line with the United Nations International Maritime Organizations strategy, which called on 173 member countries to cut emissions by half from 2008 levels by 2050.

Thebunker fuel typically used for international shipping causes problems beyond greenhouse-gas emissions. That type of fuel can have sulfur content thats 3,500 times higher that gas used in diesel cars. Sulfur is a smog-producer and precursor to ozone, which has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, heart disease, and pregnancy complications.

God bless.

They're predicting they'll be carbon neutral in eleven years or so. 2050 is when they'll be completely emission free.

Most of the people jumping on the climate change bandwagon have also jumped on the anti-nuclear one. Otherwise, it'd indeed be a great solution.

They're also mistaken on what's actually feasible.

Yeah, it's all great & what not to be Pro Environment.

But before you complain about it, propose a viable solution.

Wind Powered & Solar Powered won't get your cargo ship to port in a reasonable amount of time.

It may lower the amount of energy consumed, but it won't get it there at the same rate as current fossil fuel powered ones.

Combining Wind Powered technological advances like:
Fletnner Rotors: http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/09/spinning-metal-sails-could-slash-fuel-consumption-emissions-cargo-ships

Kite Assissted Towing: https://www.csmonitor.com/Technology/Energy/2008/0403/a-secret-to-improving-cargo-ship-efficiency-go-fly-a-kite

Hull Vane: https://www.hullvane.com/

They all help, but you need a solid base technology.

Nothing is free in this world.

Anybody telling you that it can be done needs to prove it.

I think Nuclear Powered Shipping with these assisted technologies can make it very viable and Carbon Free Emission.

A 10 year battery life for a Small Nuclear Reactor is nothing to scoff at.

Please re-read the article and pay more attention.

They will be carbon neutral within 11 years and this will completely change what is one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions.

It's a huge deal.

Except that's a faith-based claim, you don't know that all the others will follow suit. Not to shit on your optimism or anything, but let's keep it real.

What's your solution?

There is no solution that can be realistically implemented and have the desired effect of saving earth for future generations. That time has come and gone. Theres two possibilities now (in the long term after our generation is gone):

Extinction
Near extinction

What a dumb statement. So humanitys near extinction is the best case scenario in your mind? Yeah, the situation is still very tenuous and that is a possibility, but to say its all but guaranteed is laughable.

you said near extinction is the best case scenario (unless you are saying extinction is better). that is all but guaranteed if there are no other possibilities.

The best case scenario was hard policy changes 30-40 years ago. Or even 20. And by hard i mean very enforced. Weve already passed multiple "points of no return" already. And we cant prevent whats going to happen unless we start breaching human rights globally immediately.
