It's clear the Adam authorization thing was just there so they could do something different for the upgrade unlocks than the usual thing and it wasn't supposed to be the point of the story. Dumb mistake, not a big deal. It fit well enough into the story, where Samus begrudgingly agrees to Adam's demand and gets more fed up with it as the story progresses until ~~she decides screw Adam and uses her upgrades anyway~~. The only mistake story-wise is that they had you fight bosses and face challenges in the meantime, which they obviously had to do to make the game a game. Why people can't get over this is beyond me. No, the reason it was bad was because the game was a mess at a design level. The Adam thing completely destroyed the genre of the game. It's hardly even a Metroidvania anymore when upgrades are given to you just by advancing the plot. And they didn't even account for that by giving you additional unique upgrades to search out. They're all life ups, missile expansions and charge speed upgrades, none of which you need at all because the game is easy as hell even if you don't exploit the stupid quickdodge to be literally invincible. Now, supposing you are exploiting the quickdodge, not only do you destroy what little challenge there is but you also destroy the usefulness of upgrades that you search out completely. Charge speed doesn't matter because you get a full charge instantly with every quickdodge. Missile capacity doesn't matter because you'll be shooting charge shots like crazy instead. And life upgrades don't matter because you'll never get hit. So now the game has transformed into the last thing a Metroid game should ever be--a completely linear corridor shooter with no exploration and no secrets or upgrades. I'm not opposed to easy games, games without collectables, linear games, or even games that are all three, but when the game ends up as all three despite what appears to have been an effort to the contrary, because the design elements all trip over each other like the three stooges, it makes for a mess of a game. And everybody just ignores all of this because they can't resist the temptation to cry sexism. Side note, if they destroyed Samus' characer, the way they did it was with that stupid thumbs down crap.
