For one, there have been plenty of contests that he didn't win, and winning with only 60% of the vote is really very close when you think about it.

1: Any other character to make it to the final to face Link obviously will also be extremely popular, statistically it's very unlikely for one entrant in such a wide popularity contest to be massively more popular than literally all the others. 60-40 is already improbably extreme, actually.
2: People don't ask their friends to vote in an online poll for an entrant who is already winning by a large margin. They ask their friends(or random people on the internet) to vote for their favourite character when they're struggling. This will naturally even out the results. Logic, folks. ... I don't think anyone asks their friends to vote in a poll when their character is losing 40-60%.
